Its a long time since I have had a puppy. So could you please give me some advice.
I now have a 6 month old boy.How old will he be fully grown.
I have read on some sites 7-8 months he will be fully grown height wise ,then he will mature width wise ,is this correct ?
Will he grow much more between 6-8 months.
He weighed in at 25+kgs at 5 months.do you know approx what he will weigh as a adult.
His parents to my mind where not very tall dogs .

Gosh, how big will he get? how long is a piece of string? The answer is that it all depends on individual pups really.... he may be fully grown at that age, but probably older... look at the knuckles on his front legs and you should be able to see if there's growth left. His height may depend on his parents but not necessarily, my girl's sire is known for bigger pups - she is taller than both her parents.... can't remember when she stopped growing but I'm sure around 12 months or possibly more.. filling out took considerably longer. Weight, again it's impossible to say what an individual will weigh. You just have to wait and see :-)
Thanks Pennygc
I am just curious ,long time since I had a pup.My last one was a long coat white just about the smallest Gsd ive had.My daughter said she was a westie in disguise,
This lad just seems to be growing daily lol.
His front knuckles still seem to be large so take it that he still has some growing to do !!!
He is raw feed and loves it .always ready for his next meal.

Well in my medium size breed I would not expect full height until around 9 months, though hoping my 8 month old won't grow much more, as she is now bigger than Mum who is spot of the ideal height!

We have had GSD's for the last 28 years...all the time of my growing up my mum had them and still does. There is such a variation in size but as a rule of thumb they will have their height by 12 months and then fill out for the next few years...I always say with the boys you have your fully mature dog around 4/5 years old. My mum's male GSD is 27/28 inches to the shoulder and weighs in a 60kg's....yes I couldn't believe the weight either at the vets but there's not any fat on him, he's just so heavy boned. His half sister who we own is around 25 inches to the shoulder and 36'ish kg so much more average sized. The boy is the largest GSD we've had and even his breeder is amazed how big he got. They are both long haired.

agreed with staffs comments full height by 12months full grwon at around 3-4 years. My long haired boy is now full grown (4years) he is 46kg and around 27ins at the shoulder he comes from a fairly big sire and grandsire , Mum wasnt average.By comparsion his litter sister is only 32kg and probaly no more than 24ins at most. Think his brain is fully matured to he is such a delight to live with now very laid back at home
Although the vet after weighing decided he weighed too much before putting him on the scales she had just said he was fine just abig lad. I personally think he is fine as long as he stays like he is

I kept a note from when Zuma was a pup, at 5mth he was26.2kg and 23". At 6mth 31kg.
He is now 4½ yrs, weighs 41.2kg and stands 26½". Comment from Vet just before he was weighed was 'nice to see a lean Shepherd' so he is not anywhere near too porky.

My GSD boy is 26 - 27 inches and weighs around 38 - 40 kg. With all my GSDs I have felt they achieved their height between 9 mths to 1 year, and the next 2 - 3 years were spent filling out and maturing. Tatty ead - my dogs never carry and excess weight either!
My boy is only 24 ins at 6 months ,He has had quite large knuckles on his front legs that now seem to be disappearing,He also seems to be higher at the rump end .Is this normal ?
My daughter has a full sister from a earlier litter ,she is slightly smaller than he is now ,she is 17 months old .I expect him to be larger as a male versus female .Just could not remember growth rate as its a long time since I myself have had a pup.
When weighed at 5 months vet was pleased that he was on lean side .

Hee hee love the comment about the brain being fully matured....we are still waiting for our boys to engage, he's 9 now and still acts like a puppy but is such a good boy and very easy to live with.

We are the same with our dogs...I prefer them lean and muscly (sp) rather than carrying any excess. People always comment on my Rotts saying oh my mates is twice the size of your boy...at 5 years old mine weighs roughly 44 kgs and looks fit and toned same as my younger girl.
Do you find that judges have a preference for heavier dogs?
I know with our Welsh ponies we had to have them heavier for showing than we would have ideally liked them to be. They were kept a lot leaner once they retired. I know of quite a few ponies that have bad feet because of the amount of hard feed they were given as youngsters to keep them in show condition. I just wondered if it was the same with dogs.

With the GSD's I wouldn't know as ours are long haired, one a blue and gold and one a blue sable so a big no no for the show ring - however all the others in each litter were black and gold.
With the Rott's no, they shouldn't be too heavy because they could never move the way they should be able to. The can be placed lower if they don't have quite as much bone but i've not come across anyone who would like to see a heavier Rottie in the ring.
However when I was showing my Akita it was the opposite...I was shocked when I was told to get more weight on my bitch. I'd never purposely make my dogs fat and heavy for showing however a lot in the show ring used to. It showed badly when we were all at a show with a foreign judge and he made the Akita's move - a fair bit....the heavier unfit one's could not hold their topline and just flagged whereas the fitter leaner Akita's loved it and got good places! A lot of people were not happy and wrote in complaining they shouldn't have had to move their dogs that much!
Sorry for the ramble!
