Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Nesting behaviour as early as day 49?

Hi folks.

My bitch is on day 49, and yesterday I set up the whelping area. Well she settled in there and slept there yesterday, and is napping in there right now. However, before she curled up and settled she did a lot of nesting. Not just the digging which she normally does, but she was digging and growling, pushing the bedding with her nose, and circling. She also had some baby socks in there (off her feet, because she's been chewing them a bit recently), and she was gathering them up into a litlte pile and nosing them too. Is this normal, or should I be worried?

Normal

The hole in my rhododendron bed would be about 6-8 deep by that stage :-)

Thank goodness! I have to take her out on lead now because she's trying to dig outside in the garden, and because my other dog tries hard to play with her. I'm so happy to hear it's normal, I would be so upset if she whelped too early.
