Having spent the day walking the dogs in the rain - getting our ears blown inside out, feeling really chilly, and needing to have a fire tonight - my thoughts have turned to winter.

Some time ago there was a discussion about good gloves and I seem to remember someone (possibly HG) recommended a make of riding gloves.  Suggested as well fitting, warm, and non slip for leads.  Could they have begun with M or Mac?

I'm re waxing my old coat and getting ready for an arctic blast so any other hat, scarf, gloves recommendations warmly (sorry!) welcomed. :)

(My son was trying on one of those 'Fargo' hats in a shop today - I'm sorely tempted to nip back and buy myself one whilst he's not looking)

I wear Sealskinz gloves, they are waterproof and have grips, cost about £25...Not seen HG on here in a while ?

LOL if you're getting a "fargo" hat - I'm bringing a camera on our next walk :-)

The one Jack tried looked like a dead rabbit - Syrus would be thrilled, he's found me a rabbit carcass every walk so far this week.  At least I'd never lose it!!

Probably not what you want :) but I always like the Totes gloves with the rubber grip on the palm - very good for driving too :)

Totes

Quite a few of their gloves have the rubber grip :)

Could I just tell all about  'ear bags'.

A friend of mine introduced me to these last year, they are simply the best things since sliced bread for me :) :)

Always the cold gets in my ears and a hat isn't always the answer.

I strongly recommend everyone googles and finds a supplier, dog walking  is now much more comfortable.

LOL, Karen :)

Here in darkest Norfolk, I'd get a few funny looks if I walked down the road wearing them :) :) Do they stay on in the wind and can you hear the traffic coming (I walk on the road part of my walks) ???? From October until June, I live in a woolly hat (plus hood a lot of the time) which keeps my ears warm :) :)

Hats are a real problem for me. I am severely deaf and wear very strong hearing aids in both ears. If the aids get covered a get a loud squeal of feedback but to keep a hood etc loose means that it blows off in the wind. I tend to wear a woolly hat on the top of my head with my ears left outside it which is not ideal but does help a bit even if I look rather silly :)

There is a knack to putting them on, they sort of click into place.

They are perfect in the wind, and you can hear okay.

Wind particularly is bad for me as it seems to go straight in to my ears, they are amazing :)

They may pose a problem with hearing aids. My mum used to wear them (hearing aids) and she would have had the the same feedback problem.

I like my fingerless gloves with little hoods on, you can have them pulled over to be mittens, or pulled back if you need to use your fingers to clip leads on etc.

I suffer badly with Raynauds and after trying any type of glove to try and keep my hands warm-ish I found these

They are super warm, as they are ski gloves, but have really good grip all over the palm and fingers and are water proof. I've washed mine in washing machine countless times and they're still as good as new. They may be a bit bulky though? I do sometimes feel like michelin man hands :-)

Are they waterproof?
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 08.10.11 10:26 UTC
My daughters woofwear ones aren't waterproof but the sealskinz are - good but expensive.
My dad wears ski gloves when he walks our dogs in winter - warm and they have grips on the palms which is great for leads but I find them too bulky so tend to get riding gloves instead, usually good hands ones as they are warm, cheap and I lose a lot of gloves :-)

The ones the OP was thinking of might have been Macwet?

Leather snowboarding gloves!! Very pricey but very toasty and they last!! Had my last pair for over 3 boarding seasons now and wear them at least twice weekly on local slope every week!! Block out the wind, water and are shaped to fit fingers by being slightly bent. Furry lined fabulous as got raynards as well and dread winter as hands and feet kill me in the cold.....so why do I snowboard?? D'oh??!!

Also try glove liners from snow and rock, the silk ones inside any glove. Amazingly warm I use them in Scotland for boarding where it's  -6/8 duringthe day all the time,am getting the boot liners this year for dog walking. This year I need a really good hat to block out the wind, waslooking at 1 in Bulgaria last year but can't wash leather hats so need a fabric alternative. Back to snow and rock!!
