I have discovered about two hours ago My neighbours two dogs have kennel cough She knocked at my door to see if I would take her to the vets . She does not drive and she thought they were choking after eating fish .
I took her to the vets and he diagnosed kennel cough .
He gave me vaccine to inject up the nose of my dogs to see if it can stop them getting it .
Katies dogs only started to cough around midnight and were fine today with no sign of illness .
It appears it is raging at the moment .
I am praying mine dont get it they are sooo near only about 40 yds . I am off out tomorrow for stockholm tar and dog cough medicine in case .
Is there any of it your side of the pond .

Thats worrying Marie, it's not rampant here, East Anglia, but I bet there is some about. Have not done a lot of showing of late, which is where you usualy become aware of it. Tell you what though, my lot have been clear of fleas though until one of them had to spend time at the vets, now they are all scratching. Hope your lot miss it, they may well be far enough away to be lucky. Ja:)kie

Not heard of any recently in Fife but it was murder around April, friend gives Drosera tablets and swears by them? It is a weird thing and appears so quickly the first time I ever saw it was about 18 years ago when my dogs started coughing on the way back from a show I swear on the Bible I had seen no signs or I wouldn't have gone. I don't go to shows if I know I have been exposed tho' I know many people do as long as their dog is not coughing despite the KC declaration signed

Hi all Well no sign of a cough yet .
So Iam keeping my fingers crossed.
I have stolkholm tar in tin lids all over the kennel houses .
I also have Atussin cough medicine on hand and have sprayed bethedine with a power washer every where .
So hope that helps
Val recommended Parvocide so that has been ordered for monday
I cant think of anything else to do . If anyone can please tell me .
The two dogs belonging to neighbour are not too bad as she noticed it as soon as it started. ones a wheaten terrier and the other is a labrador . they were never sick before.

Mari,

Funny you should say this, but kennel cough is on the rampage at the moment in Laois, Kildare, Dublin and Wicklow and Westmeath

One of mine had it and a rescue I have at the minute caught it from her. It is a nasty dose too.
To ease the irritation, you can make a syrup using liquorice sticks from a health food store, it seems to do the trick.

Theresa :)

Theresa,
I'm always interested in natural therapies, a question tho' I thought liquorice would also work as a laxitive, does it? Forewarned is forearmed

Mari,

May I benefit once again from your knowledge? :)

What is stockholm tar and what does it do?
Also parvocide?

Thanks

i live in newcastle and have a 5month old lab. he picked up kennel cough just walking at and about. i thought he was choking to death as it happened at about 10pm at night. emergency vets were talking of huge charges and quite a way to travel. eventually one said to me if he is fine and still interested in food, just wait and bring him to them in morning. had a sleepless night with worry but found out in morning it was kennel cough. funny thing is he has never been near a show or a kennel yet. took weeks to get rid of.

Kennel cough is a virus spread just like coughs and cold in humans, by dropletts or the sputum (spelling) a dog may bring up when coughing. So what to us is a splash on the pavement is a hundred virus waiting to infect your dog. Ja:)kie

My husband had a seriously nasty cold about a month ago which lasted a week. After listening to my hubby for the last three weeks, I'm firmly convinced that Kennel Cough in dogs and Bronchitis in humans are virtually identical :(

No temperature, coughing when taking deep breaths, easily winded, tired all of the time. coughing just because. Hmmmm. He finally saw the dr. on Monday who diagnosed Bronchitis. Now I love telling him "I told you so" ;) :D

Does Virkon work too?
Can't remember until I get to see the label of the virkon,
it's pretty good on quite a few nasties, MAFF approved the vets
use it to disinfect the surgery's etc. It's the pink stuff in the bottle.
Don't spray it on carpets though coz it bleaches them ;)
