It is said that their long ears help trap scent allowing them to track more efficiently.  Long ears are certainly a feature of many scent hounds such as Bloodhound and Basset. 

Even in my own HPR breed I notice a huge difference (literally!!) in scenting ability between my boys.  I'm sure some of it is his breeding but he does have enormous ears!! :)

Now that makes some sort of sense typically of the paper not to go one to explain how
