Hi, I have a 10 month old bitch who had salmonella as a small pup. After 4 weeks of very strong antibiotics she got the all clear. Anyway since then I have tried all sorts of food and have eventually found chappie the only food she can tolerate. She is a large breed and I am worried that chappie wont have enough nutrients etc in for a growing pup.

I have tried introducing a little dry but everytime she has dry she leaks faeces. Does anyone have any ideas why? The vet is at a loss.

It may be that her gut needs longer to recover from any damage the salmonella has done.  Personally I would keep her on whatever suits her - if her food is running through her it doesn't matter how much better it seems to be according to the ingredients list, it won't do her any good ;)

Is there any reason why you particularly want her to have dry food?

I know you've probably done this already, but thought I would mention it anyway. Whenever mine have a course of antibiotics I give them probiotics afterwards to help restore the friendly bugs in their gut :-) I use this one but there are lots of different makes.

I had a Border Collie pup with similar problems, and gut damage.  I felt so guilty that I wasn't giving him puppy food, and imagined that I would have all sorts of problems.

Tinned Chappie doesn't give him any upsets, his coat is almost like burnished copper (he's a red) and I would say to you that Chappie is superb for these types of problems.  He is now 6 years old, and the vet always comments on his superb condition.

Agree, nothing like Tinned Chappie for sensitive tummies. In my time I have had two GDDs with over active bowels and chappie was the only thing that would keep them functioning anything like normal, one lived to 15 and the other 14 so it would seem that is has everything you and your dog needs apart perhaps from a peg if you like me find the smell horrid.

Thanks everyone. I dont mind what she is on (dry or wet) I just didnt think they was enough in there for her but you have all made me feel better.

She does get a little bored with it though bless her lol. She was on probiotics for a while after her abs but I am thinking of giving her some on a regular basis.

Thanks :-)

Many yrs ago I had to feed Chappie to one of my girls. She thrived on it. It is a complete food and is very good for sensitive digestive systems. If that is what your girl is able to tolerate then go ahead and feed it her. It is a complete balanced diet in a can. I dont feed it my lot now as I dislike the smell lol.
