Topic Dog Boards / Health / Rabies vaccine reaction?
- By Kimbo [gb] Date 16.09.11 21:38 UTC
Hello everyone.......guidance please....
I have a 10 month old male bullmastiff who has had his rabies shot for his passport yesterday morning......since then he has not eaten a thing......very unusual!

To add to this he has had a nasty tummy bug last week which also took his appetite and he had really bad vomiting....he had just got back to normal ( well nearly) and now this....

We asked the vet if she felt it was right to administer the vaccine so close to being unwell and she did not feel it was an issue....

He has also become REALLY affectionate.....he was always close but likes to lick our faces and does not like to be in a room alone which has never been an issue.....

Firstly do any of you see the lack of appetite as a side affect?
And how long to I leave it whilst not eating before I call the vets.....I am reluctant to try to change his food as he loved it before so just wonder if he is going through a faze!!

Thanks in advance

Kim

Never had a rabies vaccine but in my experience not at all uncommon following the routine vaccines.  All mine have been fine after a day or two.

Just wanted to say too in case you don't know he won't need a blood test for his passport. From January 1st 2012 blood tests won't be necessary and of course your passport won't be valid till that date anyway :-)

Have only had one of My Gang been given a Rabies Vaccine..

Like yours He was off his food for several days...sick...red hot..."Clingy"...and weak on his hind legs...but this did pass..

Of all My Dogs now though He is the one who I feel could be a cat killer and the one who has a tendency to be wary of strangers...and other dogs...and doesn't like to be taken by surprise....

Obviously in His case....I can't definitively say it was the vaccine..that caused a temperament change...but He is slightly different to My others..

I gave Him homeopathic arsenicum at 30c to combat the sickness and belladonna 30c to bring his temp down....

I would try not to change his diet at this stage as you probably already know it can lead to further digestive upset..but if you feel that He is experiencing side effects then it is worth reporting...

Vaccine Manufacturers can only get a clear idea of side effects through people letting them know....

Thanks for your comments......I feel a little more relieved to hear that it appears to be normal.....he has eaten a little breakfast today.......

Just wanted to say too in case you don't know he won't need a blood test for his passport. From January 1st 2012 blood tests won't be necessary and of course your passport won't be valid till that date anyway

Can I ask about this post.......what do you mean it won't be valid until then ?

We are relocating to Texas in December with my job and I was told that I still need the blood tests as the rules don't change until January but made no mention of the passport not being valid......I was told that after the bloods are back in 4weeks providing the results are ok they will issue the passport on that day......

I hope this is the case otherwise we have a major issue if he can't go until January.....

Don't worry, you'll be able to go. You just won't be able to return until January, that's all. :-)

The rules are stricter for bringing them into the UK rather than taking them out, if you were doing the former there is a delay of several months between bloods and travel, that won't be the case from January.

As you are leaving the country in Dec not just for a holiday there should not be a problem.

Phew.......thanks for replys......I really panicked then thinking that was going to be something else for me to plan!!

Boscoe is much better this morning and has eaten a few snacks today too......even though he was a naughty boy at my parents farm and decided to run off with a stick and eat half of it........hope this doesn't set him back again but what can you do when you have 51kgs worth of bully running at full pace the other way with a stick and thinks your playing.......

Sorry Kimbo, didn't meant to panic you, as you're leaving the country yes that will be fine. I assumed that you were gong on holiday or taking your dog abroad for a show etc and wanting to return, which you wouldn't be able to do till January :-)

I would check about needign a blood test to go to USA when I checked (I travelled to New york in Dec 2010) they only needed up to date Rabies, with you able to travel after so many weeks.

The blood testing has always been for coming back here.

Check with the rules for the state yoru going to and any otehrs you go through.
