how to cope with Toy Envy? - 10mth and 11wk westies .. even if they have two identical toys .. they always want the one the other one is playing with - i try and give them another toy or distract them but Max (11wks) will bark and nag Bella until she walks away then steals the toy. plays with it for two minutes then looses interest.
help.
think i read an idea on here to leave lots of toys about so one cant possibly get them all?mind you, that wont stop young man pinching the toy his sisters got,but at least she can get another if theres plenty about!

Spud has "toy envy" as soon as he see's Daisy has something he wants it, and he's 9 !, I just live with it, I have to say I've never tried to train him out of it other than telling him" no" if I happen to be playing with Daisy with the toy, which he does, then sits and moans about the sheer unfairness of it all. I just see it as one of those interactions dogs have that we don't approve of, but that they probably don't have a problem with.
you could try removing him from the room for a timeout. Or have him on a pupline whilst you teach him to share. One of my rescues was very toy/food/chew possessive I tried leaving out 12 chews for 4 dogs and he literally gathered them up, lay on them and growled at everyone, me included, twas a serious issue for him!!
I used a house training line in the end and handed out chews individually and simply restrained him whilst the others finished. I did use extra food for him when he chose to lie down without direction, so he taught himself to leave the chews when others had them. Took a while, but it was quite an aggressive behaviour, with toys I would increase the number and provided your girl isn't overly bothered I'd ignore a lot of it. I think when he reaches 16/20 weeks of age and comes off puppy licence she will probably correct him herself, if she's capable.
We had 3 yorkies who would continuously "swap" toys. The eldest male would also hoard as many as he could get in his basket, then one toy at a time strut infront of the others with a toy in his mouth muttering. Odly when he died a couple of years ago the other 2 now are not that interested in the toys though that could be an age thing also.
