Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / What are the other common allergens in complete dry dog food
- By RoxyandBella [gb] Date 30.08.11 13:53 UTC
I have a dog that seems allergic to something in many brands of commercial dry dog feeds, but I can't work out what ingredient it is. But I know for definite it is not a rice or wheat. As I have feed my dog home cooked meals with pasta and rice and gave her bread.  This always went well with her tummy.  But whenever I feed her kibbles she develops runny poos.  The only brands I found she tolerates well is Acana (grain free) and TOTW (grain free) and unbranded working greyhound feed (with wheat and corn in it) that she gets in boarding kennels.  But the well regarded brands like JWB (including their grain free variety), Wainwrights, Royal Canin, Waitrose own organic brand and Applaws she can't digest properly.  I was particularly upset that she can't have Applaws (she gets terrible squits on it), as this is the only British manufacture that does high meat content kibbles.
I would prefer to feed my dog British made food rather than imported from US or Canada, but don't want to cause her future tummy upsets by experimenting, so hope someone could advise on common allergens to avoid in commercial dog foods, apart from rice and wheat.
Thanks

You could start by trying to find the list of ingredients in the foods she can't tolerate on the web and see if there is a common ingredient in them so you can narrow down the field, otherwise without an allergy test I think it might be needle in a haystack time. She may also be allergic to multiple allergens, although from what you describe perhaps Colitis may be the culprit ?.

It is Colitis, but she only develops it when she eats certain foods (Applaws and JWB in particular).  After week or two on home cooking she gets back to normal and then I add Acana or TOTW and she does well. She also eats raw and does well on that, but for practical reasons I want to keep her on kibbles.  I don't mind feeding her the above brands, but would prefer to source food locally, especially unbranded from small family manufactures with good ethics and do not cost a fortune.  I've seen many good recommendations on this site, but worry that it may not go well.

She does tolerate grains (rice, wheat and possibly corn) very well, it is something else that causes upsets.   The only one ingredient I've single out so far is a beet pulp - it used as filler in most foods she doesn't tolerate, but not in Acana or TOTW.  But beet pulp sounds pretty healthy and I can't think why it could be bad for my dog and haven't heard about problems in other dogs.

Who can say what starts a reaction, just because something may be healthy doesn't mean it's not the culprit I'm afraid, one of my dogs reacts badly to carrots, can't get much healthier than them.

You might find this food matches what your after http://www.landofholisticpets.co.uk/Robbies_Holistic_Cuisine.html they do a kibble and a dehydrated food, which has the convenience of a kibble but the benefits of a wet diet, and doesn't appear to have beet pulp.

I am using golden eagle from croft.
I think it is great. my bt is allergic to wheat and grass and this has cleared his feet and itchy patches.
We went onto fatboy a while ago because he needed weight on, but when he got to the right size we changed to GE and he loves it.

Hello I have had three golden retrievers and over the years at different times they have developed colitis after being on jwb for a long time. I now have them on Wafcol Salmon and Potato and (cross fingers ) no more problems and it is a british firm. You can buy it at PAH or various great internet companies and it is on par with many other top brands price wise.
