Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How much rice to feed?
- By Eeyore [gb] Date 25.08.11 13:58 UTC
I am having to put my 20 week pup on to white fish and rice to settle his tummy as he has had a large bout of colitis. I was wondering how much rice in total per day that I should feed him? He weighs 23kgs.
We think that he may have a food intolerance. We have tried RC and JWB.
I hope someone can give me some advice.

I would work this out by feeding a total food allowence of 10% of his body weight ( for a puppy ) then feed one third rice and the rest chicken

so for a 23kg dog = I would work on approx 1534g chicken and 766g rice / day  ( 4 feeds)

For more long term use ( if he is ok on chicken and rice) you might want to discuss with your vet trying Nature Diet - these are simple diets one protein / rice / carrots -- http://www.naturediet.co.uk/productschicken.html

You might also want to consider eliminating grains, including rice, from your dog's diet. Many dogs just can't cope with grains, afterall they are basically carnivores and aren't designed to eat them.

If my dogs get an upset tum, I prefer white fish and boiled potato, and the problem is usually sorted pretty quickly.

yep potato would also work well :)

forgot to say would add some calcium to the diet, as well esp if you are going to be on this a while. You can save egg shells, wash them and dry overnight then blitz in coffee grinded or liquidizer or even morter / pestle to give fine powder. Add approx 1 tsp to 500g  meat .

I agree you should add calcium (and other stuff probably) but would suggest adding vit d to the calcium as otherwise it prevents the absorption of other minerals and vitamins (which is why if you buy calcium as a supplement it always has vit d added).  I'd add whole fish oil and vits B, D and E to calcium at least
