Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Puppy is annoying older dogs.

Hello.
Our 15 week old puppy is now very well behaved except the usual chewing things and barking but other than that he's doing well.
We walk our older dog over fields and usually have 1 or two other dogs with us - one being 11 and another being 3 and have started taking our puppy with us but he's really annoying the older dogs but don't know how to make him stop except putting him on the lead.
He barks at them and runs underneath them and basically just irritates them.
It's not fair on the older dogs because its their territory and he's annoying them and I don't know how to make him stop. The 11 year old is quite frail so can't really put the pup in his place and the 3 year old is shy and just runs away!
What can I do?

I have a pup who is 6 months old today and is really abusing her puppy license, she really goes to ton at th3em launching herslef at them pulling them about grabbing their legs and so on.

She has four victims at home (never dared to annoy great great grandma Kizi who passed away 10 days ago), even though she wasn't physically as strong as in her youth.

If the older dogs won't tel pup off then you have to initiate the time outs.

The field is not the other dogs territory, and they will need to learn to share, but if the pup is a nuisance go back to separate walks for the puppy for the time being or put him on the lead to learn some manners.  At his age he won't need to be walked much for exercise (5 mins walk per month of life) and he will respond better to training if he is on his own.

The puppy will not need the amount of free running that a 3 or 11 year old adult dog will & I personally wouldnt run in a field at that age(garden excercise should be sufficient). My 6 month hasnt had free running, although it will be soon.
As a previous postee has said 5 mins per month, your pup should be getting 20 mins max.
It may not be their territory, as it is a field and I would control him anyway, he needs to learn respect for his elders & this means being put on a lead, so be it.

I walk my 7 month old separately from my other 3.  One reason being he can't keep up with them but will try so I know he would over-do it.  The other reason being is this is my time to bond and train him on his own and socialise him too.  The 3 girls go off-road, out-of-the way walks.  My pup goes to parks and past shops and along main roads.

Separate walks till she matures will be the only way to stop this other than keeping her on-lead but I would do this as she shouldn't be allowed to pester the other dogs so much.  I have had to re-home a dog for this exact reason.  I didn't step in soon enough and the chasing lead to biting and then the biting got serious till the 'pestering' dog ripped the smaller dogs neck.  I understand it was instinct but I should've stepped in sooner to stop it.  After that incident, I couldn't put the 2 dogs together again without incident.  The younger had to be re-homed.

Yep, agree with the others.  Short walks for this age pup and on a training lead when in fields.  I'm assuming that her behaviour is the same at home in the garden.  In an enclosed area, its easier for you to monitor and handle.  Keep her on a training lead again and when she starts to hassle the older ones, reprimand her vocally and move her away from them.  Sometimes its better if you make yourself more interesting than the other dogs when you are out and about so talking to the pup and praising it all the time when you're out and about helps.  Apologies if you've heard all this before but it worked with my pup and my 11 year old.

every pup I have ever had has continued in this manner at a similar age... we find they cant keep up with the older dogs so tends to stand and wait until they are in firing distance then launch themselves like missiles .
We usually keep pup on a long line so we can reel him in..then when other dogs have had a good run they go back on lead while pup has a free run.. we do this until pup has a bit more sense .
We also exercise seperately to give each dog 1 to 1 as its difficult with 4 dogs to give them time.

Thanks, maybe we will try putting him on a long lead for now then.
We only take him two or three times a week for him to socialise with the other dogs, it's just when they run passed him with a ball or something he chases after them. On the other days we take him around the village or down to a cafe so that he can be around people and we're trying not to restrict his walks really quiet roads.

He's not really like that in the garden at home only for the first few minutes and then he gets bored and just does his own thing.
