Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Withdrawing from non-breed classes
- By CVL Date 11.08.11 09:25 UTC
I'm afraid I have yet another technical question for you all!

I don't normally enter AV or stakes classes, but at one particular show I need to enter another class (at a cost of £1 or pay £5 for the carpark!).  So I thought I would enter either the AV Gundog or the Junior Stakes.  However I realise these are often very late on in the day, so I may not fancy staying for it if we're done very early.  I know there are rules about not withdrawing from breed classes, but do these apply to AV or stakes classes?

Thanks :-)

Clare

You can withdraw from AV Classes classes at anytime.. If you take BOB you can withdraw from AV to remain an unbeaten dog for the group too.

For the sake of the £1, I would enter the AV class rather than the Stakes classes :-)

Hi clare,if the A.V class is judged before your breed class you can withdraw your dog in order to remain unbeaten, i think if your dog wins b.o.b you can also withdraw so to remain unbeaten, hope this helps

I thought you had to compete in breed? if there is a breed class available?  but could withdrawal from AV if you get BOB in your breed?

These rules are a mind field aren't they!

This is correct Rachel, you cannot go into av Class and withdraw from Breed, youcan win breed and withdraw from AV.

Thanks... I wasn't really meaning if we win BOB, more if I can't be bothered hanging around :-D  (aim low, then anything better is a bonus).  I just worried that any wins or placings wouldn't 'count' if I withdrew from other classes.

In fact people withdraw from A V Classes or stakes for any number of reasons, in theory you should tell the secretary or at least the steward of that ring you are withdrawing from but few do.

With a pup it is fair enough to withdraw because your dog is tired and go home I don't think anyone would object to that. Lots of people withdraw because they have a dog sitter at home and classes have run on longer than anticipated, some even withdraw from BIS or group.

You can't withdraw from a breed class and continue showing but you can withdraw from a A V or Stakes class and then show in a breed class.

i did say if AV was before the breed class which it some times is :)you can withdraw from it(AV)

Tried to edit but too late, you can withdraw from a breed class but then you can't continue showing, it would be unusual but if your dog goes lame or is stung by a wasp you may wish to withdraw but even if the dog recovers later it can not be shown at that show once it has been withdrawn from a breed class.

I misread your post totally - I thought you were saying you could withdrawal from your breed class if you won AV - sorry!  I can see yes withdrawing from AV or Stakes if before your breed lol!

confusing isn't it! ;)

Although some people think you can still go into Best of Breed if beaten in the AV classes!

Hi,

I'm revisiting this post years later :-)

I've been reluctant to enter AV classes because I still don't really get the rules!

I understand that I can withdraw from AV at any time... but Rachel, what you say about BOB if beaten in AV classes?  Very confusing rule... so if a dog was beaten in AV by other breeds, yet beat all of its breed in the breed class, it still wouldn't be eligible for BOB?

Are all these rules listed anywhere?!  The more I query things, the more complicated things become :-D

Thanks,

Clare

Hi

Yes you are eligible for bob and can be awarded but can not go into the groups as an unbeaten dog .

I'm off to bed now probably haven't explained clearly but hope you understand x

I think I meant to say that in my earlier post but didn't !

If your beaten in AV this does not affect you doing any bred classes or BOB.
It only effects if you go further as in group or BIS because even though you are a best of your breed you are a beaten dog, as in beaten by another breed.
Thats why a lot of people wont enter AV if it ends up being before breed classes just in case they do that well. And the reason they have the withdraw rule so if you take BOB you dont do AV classes in order to stay unbeaten.

I personally still enter AV and stakes classes regardless of how well I do, mainly because in my new breed you are unlikely to get big places at champ shows and not enough in classes for JW points at open shows so might as well make the most of the day out.

Thanks :-)  That all makes sense.  These things have obviously never applied to me, but I like to know the ins and outs of everything anyway!

I believe sometimes it is a useful strategy... ;)
Say you are showing a puppy at an Open... you don't want to stay around for too long for the Group as it would be too much in one day, so enter an AV class which is judged either before the breed class or soon after, as long as it's beaten even if it wins BOB you can take your pup home to rest and put your feet up :)
