Topic Dog Boards / Health / Garlic - How/What Type Do You Give
- By K9-Em [gb] Date 04.08.11 12:27 UTC
Hi all,

Hope you lovely people are all well.

Was at the vets the other night just for a check as Dog has a funny floating rib where it sticks out!

I told the vet I use garlic and she told me it is poisonous to dogs?! I have had a little research on the Internet and found Garlic contains thiosulphate which apparently makes it toxic.

Now I don't like frontline/stronghold/advocate etc and have been using garlic with success for the last year. However now I'm concerned that I'm harming my Dog.

Opinions? Also can those of you who feed garlic advise what type/brand and how much a day?

Many thanks :)

When I am at home my dogs get a clove of fresh garlic per day. When I travel they get garlic pills.

If it was a problem then I doubt several reputable firms would be producing the latter as a veterinary licensed medecine! ;)

Of course ANYTHING in excess is toxic, including water, but if you are controlling the issue there is not a problem.

I give mine fresh garlic - a clove a day. When it runs out (grown in the garden) I give mine the garlic granules meant for horses - a small amount sprinkled on their dinner each day.

Mine have Dorwest Garlic & Fenugreek. Like others have said many things in excess are posionous. I wonder if the vet would have been as horrified bout the chemicals in flea treatments etc ? Like youI use garlic to prevent fleas and treat minor infection :0

Thank you guys! :) Knew you would reassure me!

Tohme - The Garlic pearls do you know what the dosage is? It is not on the website. Im thinking capsules will be easier then the liquid I currently use as Evies onto me and turns her nose up some days! lol :)

Thanks

I give Garlic and Fenugreek tablets from Dorwest Herbs and one of mine takes them as a treat if I've forgotten to tip them into his dinner.  In fact all three dogs seem to really like them :)

It is true that lots of people give dogs garlic it is equally true it is poisonous to dogs along with onion, chocolate and grapes. Would think that it is excessive use or a build up over years that cause a problem and with the exception of chocolate where a small amount can cause problems occasional use will not be a problem.

Would hope that tablets are OK as the dangerous chemical will have been removed.

Hi Jackie,

I am concerned by the build up, the garlic has to be given everyday to be affective flea prevention, please correct me if I'm wrong :)

So if I'm giving it everyday is it going to harm her? I think i am going to switch to a tablet form.

K9-Em, I do not know the exact risk involved I only know that garlic contains a substance that is harmful, possibly fatal, to dogs. I know a lot of people have fed it but if and when the dog dies I don't suppose anyone does a test for toxins they accept the dog has fallen ill and died. Do not expect many people feed enough to have immediate effect and I don't know if it's effects can be accumulative but that is how allergic reaction works so I think it very likely. Personally I would not risk it and would rather use a product that has been tested for effects both immediate and long term.

I would not actually give a raw garlic clove(due to the items that have been in dog press relating to its toxicity) but I do give Garlic or Garlic & Fenugrek tablets made specifically for dogs(& I think cats) by Dorwest.

Mine have been getting a Garlic Oil 2mgs capsule daily for the last 7 yrs with no adverse affect, not only is there no fleas it boosts their immune system too.

I take the same capsules to help me fight off infections passed on by my patients.

Thank you for all your replies. Why do some of you choose Garlic and Fenugreek over just plain garlic?

Thanks again :) x

I give it for skin but have a look at the Dorwest Herbs site for their useful explanations.  They also stock Garlic Juice...

Not in this case...

maisiemum have a read of the links we've provided, giving garlic in this way is not harmful to our dogs.

I used to give mine garlic capsules once a week.  I haven't seen any fleas on any of my dogs for about 10 years now and there are loads of cats around who like to spend time in my garden tormenting the dogs.

Ours have garlic and fenugreek from Dorwest once a day every day, we have a 14 year old Boxer and a nearly 10 year old Boxer as well who've always had garlic with absoloutely no problems.  If you have any doubts at all speak to the folks at Dorwest, they're very helpful.  Many years ago a friend mentioned to his Vet about onions being poisonous, the Vet's reply was that the dog would have to eat an awful lot of onion for it to harm him.
