Topic Dog Boards / Health / PANACUR - Can someone tell me....

...what would be the usual dose and panacur percentage, when using panacur for lungworm?

Eve usually has monthly Advocate, but has been having a reaction to it for the last few months. Vet ( not our usual one) has prescribed Panacur granules 22% 11 sachets over the 7 day period - just the Panacur alone will cost me £15 monthly :-( so will be looking to buy it cheaper online, but was really wondering if, as it is a longer course, if the percentage should be less. Our course is due to start tomorrow, but will probably be postponed, as an op looks likely :-(

Am seeing our vet tomorrow morning for Eve's ears so will be speaking to him about it anyway, but thought I would ask you knowledgable lot first! :-D

Thanx

Just a point some vets want a dog treated for lungworm before an op regadless of the presence of symptoms.
I was not aware panacur is preventative for lungworm only curative am I wrong ?

I think you are right FF, but she can't seem to have Advocate anymore. The reaction time has gone from 4 days to 2 days to 12 hrs after the dose, the last 3 months. She still needs something for lungworm so they have said panacur - in effect it means she will be treated for lungworm every month! :( I will ask him tomorrow if the 10% is suitable, as 22% seems a bit much! Checked prices online too - can get it for just over £6!

Milbemax is the other wormer for lung worm. I have not heard of using Panacur.

I wouldn't give it every month.  i only do mine every 4-6 months.  i don't have any problems.

my personal opinion is that they don't need their bodies loaded with chemicals for no reason.  We don't worm our children unless they have it. :)

Your dogs body could be overloaded with the wormer.  Think your vet saw you coming; where's he going on holiday this year lol.

Hi :-) No he's not like that. He's even let us off paying for certain tests , knowing our insurance wont pay. Our Pierre died of lungworm last year, we live in a lungworm area,  so we have to worm monthly with Advocate. Unfortunately my girl has developed a reaction to Advocate so has to have monthly panacur to try and safeguard her. My boy is still on monthly Advocate. Once they are past the 'danger age' and have reached 2 or 3, we could if we wanted to, move to a more usual worming regime. Having watched Pierre dying in front of me having missed 1 dose of Advocate, I'm not sure I would want to take the risk!

I do understand where you are coming from, vets are expensive and some are certainly out to get all they can from you, especially if you are naive - our 1st vet was like that!!! This one has even refunded my wormer and given a more manageable dose of 1 1/2 sachets once a month and advised us to buy online, explaining why vets prices are dearer

Sorry to hear that, I can understand why you are worried.
