Topic Dog Boards / Health / elbowing out OR toeing in
- By Jazzbo [gb] Date 01.08.11 14:40 UTC
Hi all

I am new here, but i have a question please.
My 18month old medium breed bitch has just started 'toeing in' in the show ring, although one write up said she was elbowing out, either or, does anyone have any advice for this please.
I wonder if i need to give her more road walking, as being summer she is getting mainly off lead running on grass.

Does your breed standard say the elbows should be tucked well in and if so are they, have you asked someone to move the dog for you so you can see what is happening. There is obviously a problem with the dogs front movement but one would need to see the problem to suggest a cure if in deed that is possible. So best to ask someone in the breed you trust who judges to get an answer on what is wrong and what if anything you can do to help with it.

Thankyou for your reply.
Yes breed standard says elbows to be tucked well in, and when standing she has the most fab front, i never have to adjust her front when standing, and its only recently i have noticed this problem.
I was swimming her every week, and no problem, I have recently only been swimming her once a month since crufts.
It seems to me like she is turning her front two toes in??? one side worse than the other

Well, not being able to see what is happening makes it almost impossible to make suggestions but I would start by having the vet take a look at her front and see if something is happening to the joints. Is yours a breed that suffers OCD, not that I am suggesting this is the problem but I was thinking perhaps if there was damage at the elbow it may be causing her to turn the feet in for comfort.

One has to accept that it is possible this is just a conformation fault but before you accept that I would check that there is not an injury causing this problem. As you are suggesting it may just be a case of corrective exercise but I would get further advise before you set off on an exercise regime that could do more harm than good.

Not a breed which suffers from ocd, and only had hips and elbows scored a few months back and had a score of 0/0 elbows come back, which makes me wonder that it could be exercise related, but i will get her checked out by my vet.
Many thanks fpor your advice.

I have spoken to someone in my breed, she has been in the breed ages, she also judges, she is going to look at her tomorrow for me, but reccomends seeing a chiropractor, but also said it may be a growing phase!!!
i will let you know what she thinks tomorrow

It is good you have someone taking a look but would not think it was a problem concerning the spine and if it was I would want a vet to x-ray first before it was manipulated by a chiropractor.
