Dogs
My understanding is that for hip scoring, xrays of the individual dogs hips are taken and are then scored by a specialist. Each hip is given a score. The lower the score the better, but if you have a dog with a hip score of ten, then if it is 5 on each hip this is better than 8 on one and 2 on the other.
So both the dogs would need this done. I think the KC have a list of the average hip scores for breeds which has been compiled over the years and your dogs score would be checked against this, and this would determine whether or not your dog had good hips for it's breed. Obviously with a high score for the breed it is not recommended that you breed the dog.
As for the eyes, I think again that it is an examination of the dogs eyes using drops, not sure, someone else will know.

Your dog's eyes are examined by a canine ophthalmologist under the KC, BVA, ISDS scheme and if ok a pass certificate will be issued which lasts for one year from that time.
Hips are x-rayed by your vet and the plates are then sent to the BVA for inspection and measurement by a panellist and a score (Between 0 and 53 for each hip) is sent to you. Low= good, high= bad.

Hi Theresa, if the dogs are examined in a darkened room drops don`t have to be used.

How can you possibly consider breeding and raising three pups and look for a bitch to breed from now, if you dont even know anything about hip scoring!!! Why on earth would they add dam and sires score together? Each dog is an individual and is scored as such. If you were short sighted, would you add your mum and dads eye test result together, divide by two and that would be YOUR result? Of course not. Wouldnt it be much better for your dogs( as you are such a great animal lover) to learn a bit about dog related problems, what happens when a bitch comes in season etc, BEFORE you start breeding?
What do you mean "do the eyes have to be perfectly clear"??????? " what are they allowed up to for a pass"
They either have an eye disease or they don`t! Simple as that. Diagnosed by an Opthalmologist. There are many hereditary eye diseases in dogs, some of which are not detectedable at birth which is why a yearly exam needs to be done. You need to go to a search engine and start doing some research on the breed of dogs you have & the relevant hereditary probs that goes with them instead of spending all day on this board! Much as I have enjoyed your company & knowing how much you adore your dogs, your time would be better spent learning all about them.
