Topic Dog Boards / Health / Possible stroke ?

My lovely old lady Pepsi had a funny turn this morning. I worked a night last night so OH took the girlies out this morning. Pepsi is an old gal for a Bernese at 9 1/2 years but she is well and loves her walks we just walk at her pace. This morning while out she was chomping on grass, nothing new there she often does, then she threw up as per usuall. Ron said she was fine and carried on with the walk but 10 mins later she suddenly went "wobbly" on her legs then just fell over on to her side and lay there not moving for 5 mins. She had her eyes open and was not fitting just laying there looking vacant. After 5 mins and him trying to get her up she struggled to her feet and though a little wonkey carried on and walked slowly back to the car. She got home and was fine, had her breakfast as if nothing had happened and is now her usual self.
She is sat wiith me as I write this looking her usual self and seems to have no ill effects. I am reluctant to call the vet out (I would do if I was in the least bit worried or thought they needed to do anything ) I just wonder if she had a small stroke, any one ever had this happen?
I have had a hectic day as I slept when I got home at 8.30am this morn till 12.30 then had to take my youngest daughter and children home to Wales (3 hour round trip...seemed like longer with worrying about Pepsi but I had to go, Ron stayed with the girlies just in case Pepsi was  unwell again)) I have just got back now and thought I would pick your collective very expierienced brains.

My Rufus the Cavalier had several strokes over his last few years -one every 3-4 months or so. It always started with him throwing up, then being a bit wobbly, then not being able to walk. It usually took about 4 hours before he was back on his feet properly although I think the first couple of times may have been just half an hour or so. So yes sounds similar, just less severe.

Could be a dog version of a TIA Trans ischeamic attack - a mini stroke.Confusion and poor co ordination for a few hours, then normality.

In the past I had an Irish Setter that had these symptoms. They were TIA's and the Vet put her on Vivitonin which helped alot and kept her stable for just over a year, and I eventually lost her at nearly 14 years.

Hope she's ok Aileen xx...

Can't help, but thinking of you and fingers crossed she doesn't have any more.

I am inclined to think it was a small stroke, She has eaten her tea and is right as rain now. I may pop her down to the vet on Monday just to have her checked out but for the moment she seems to be OK.Thanks all.

No advice sorry but just wanted to say I hope Pepsi is ok and it is not as serious as you are thinking.

Hope she is OK Aileen - they do worry us don't they. The only thing I would say is maybe keep her close to home/car when walking her until you have had a word with the vet. If it happens again and she takes longer to recover it would be a nightmare trying to move a dog that size!

I remember Bramble let out a squeal when I was walking her, just when I was at the furthest point from the car. She was rolling on the ground and let out this almighty squeal, I just thought  'OMG she has hurt her back, how am I going to get her back to the car' when she got up and walked off as if nothing had happened. Had a look on the ground and there was this tiny jaggy bush she had rolled on - what a big wuss!!! :-D
