Topic Dog Boards / Health / red mites (harvest mites)

A while back there was a post about this and many of you gave the name of a spray or wash that you used to great effect.   I cant remember the name of this and would be grateful for comments.   Irish Red Setter suffers terribly from red mites from now on until well into autumn.

One of the spot ons deals with this but if you can buy benzyl benzoate from the chemist and make up a very weak solution with which to wipe the feet, that should do it. Chemists are reluctant to sell it now.

spot ons no good whatsoever.  Will try Benzyl benzoate.   Have you used?

I believe horsey people use it too so may be one of them can tell you where to get it. Also does thornit cure the problem. Sorry just realised I have added questions rather than answering the op

FF yes horsey people use it for sweet itch, very soothing. i got it from chemists, they had to order it in. could be worth an internet search though.

I think this is another condition the ever useful Thornit can be used for.

Denes mite cream always worked well on one of my girls .

I thik Thornit was the one I could not remember.   Is it a powder?  And where can I get it?
- By Uisneach [gb] Date 27.07.11 20:36 UTC
Is it Thornit ear powder?
- By Celli [gb] Date 28.07.11 08:27 UTC
Yes it's Thornit ear powder, I've only ever bought in on-line, just google it, there are loads of suppliers. I've never had to use it for Harvest Mites but it states in the bumf that it can be used for them.

Apparently Stronghold SPRAY works on harvestmites.

I didn't know Stronghold came in a spray version; I know Frontline does though.

Frontline Spray works on Harvest Mites. One of my aussies got them half way down his tail and kept bitting it until I put the spray on. Had to do it over several days but it did get rid of them.

Neither stronghold nor Frontline sprays work very well on him.
Will try Thornit.   Thank you for your replies.

we got the mites last year and used hibiscrub wash and Thornit and it worked a treat.
Not yet had them this year but I'm sure we will(coming from own garden last year)...
I just kept powdering the between toes  with Thornit ever now and again and had no issues after I started doing this :).

Nellie's had harvest mites twice, both times in her armpits!!  Frontline no good at all, but I found that common garden Bob Martin's Mulit-purpose Flea Spray worked very effectively - they vanished within 24 hrs of spraying.  I've still got a bottle in the cupboard. :)
