The girlies and I have had a very traumatic walk today. The pup managed to find a wasps nest and obviously disturbed it and we were attacked. We are all OK now but it has been a terrifying expieriance and we could not get away from them. I was trying to pull wasps out of thier coats and run away. I had a t-shirt full of them and was running through the park in my bra !!!We got to the vets and combed loads out of thier coats in the surgery. Merlot and the pup have been stung numerous times but Pepsi seems OK. They have had piriton and steroids and hopefully are going to be OK. I have never been so frightened and the bloody things were flying round the car as I tried to get to the vet. Be warned as you walk I would not wish that on anyone else.

Poor you and the girls :-( I hate wasps

I must admit I did have a sneeky smile imagining you streaking through the park in your bra though :-P

A few years ago the dogs and I were attacked by a rogue swarm of bees that had nested in a hollow tree that we just happened to walk near. The noise was terrifying and they flipping hurt! Hope you're all feeling better now.

Goodness that walk turned out more than you bargained for. Hope you all recover soon. Our oldest dog was stung on the lip when he was a pup and he still has a mark there 12 years later. Nasty things wsps :(

Very scary - I have recently had an experience but nowhere near yours - and a handful of wasps but that was bad enough

Obvious we too disturbed something but thankfully didn't get the whole swarm - and I was scared enough by that..

I was stung as was the pup but think the other boys got away with it - they just seem to stick to the coat don't they :(

I do hope you are all ok now xx

Someone suggested vinegar for the sting Aileen and it did help x

Glad my traumatic expieriance has brought a smile to someones face LJS... :-) Me in bra and jeans is a sight to see...... LOL
I am feeing a little less stressed now and the girls seem to have settled a bit. They are a but lumpy but nothing on thier mouths, front and back legs seem to have taken the brunt of it. I was worried they may have been stung in thier mouths as they were trying to pull the wasps out with thier teeth. The poor pup is most traumatized but she has now eaten her breakfast and I think the steroids are taking the pain away. With such  a lot of coat the damm wasps were burying down into them and it was nigh on immpossible to get them out. How my hands are not covered in stings I will never know. I seem to have got away with just a couple to my chest...need a bigger bra now !!! :-D

The main thing is you got them to the vets pretty quickly as treated :-)

Hope the recovery is quick and you all feel better soon and sorry for laughing !

That happened to me, several years ago now. It was terrifying, I had nightmares about the noise for weeks. Thankfully it was raining, and I was wearing waterproofs top and bottom. I also had a flexi lead on me, and once we'd run away, I stopped and used the handle to comb the dogs coat back and the wasps flew out. I took him straight to the vet and he was treated for it and I managed to get away with no stings at all. From that day on he developed a hatred of all flying insects and would kill them on sight, but he did it without getting stung again.

At least you had a bra on!

Every cloud as they say (into the valley of death, ok park, in search of wasps :-D )

Seriously, glad you're all not too badly stung or too traumatised ......... nasty things wasps.  Years ago my mum took a hedge cutter through a nest and was covered in stings :-(

Massive hug, it must have been terrifying, I remember one of my brothers kicking something on the ground once next minute a load of wasps flew out, up my brothers trouser leg   lesson learnt don't kick things. :-)

So easy for a dog or pup to put their nose in the wrong place, glad that you are all ok, I bet you felt like you were in a horror film. {{{{hug}}}}

I bet you felt like you were in a horror film

That just about sums it up to a tee.
The council have just rung (I reported it as soon as I could) they are on the way to the park and are going to destroy it. They think a badger (The ground round it was disturbed) had been rooting round it and the officer said that it makes wasps very dangerouse when that happens as the wasps then look at anything that moves by the nest as a threat and attack. Poor Vino jutst happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Oh god that must have been terrifying.
I cant stand wasps, they scare me, especially using the petrol equipment we use it makes them angry. We have left hedges half cut until the council come to kill them before we carry on.
Worryingly enough, wasps can kill in extreme cases. Not from anaphalaxis but from the body shutting down because of the stings :( :(
You and the dogs were VERY lucky.
Am so pleased you had a happy outcome xxx

Same here, glad ur ok.  I'd have been petrified.  Never thought of them sticking in the coat.

You have my full sympathy. A few years ago the two youngsters ran into the bee hives in the field I used to walk in at lunchtime. Typically they came running back to 'mummy' when they started getting stung bringing all the bees with them.
I don't know where it came from but I ran down to the car salesroom nearby and screamed at the poor young trainee to put the power hose on us. It must have been a strange sight seeing me and 4 dogs being hosed down.
It did the job though although a few tough bees were buried deep into the long haired dogs and had to be pulled out.
Dogs were OK but I ended up having to go to doctors with over 20 stings in my head alone but they all calmed down in a few days. The afternoon off work was no compensation!!
Glad you are all OK and hopefully pup will steer well clear in future!

That is my absolute worst nightmare - I hate wasps with a passion!

Glad you and the dogs are recovering (((((hugs)))))
- By annastasia [gb] Date 20.07.11 12:43 UTC
happened to me a few years ago, horrible wasps, i too stripped my clothes off, i was in the woods and walked into the nest it was in some undergrowth, hope you are feeling better now,
- By ali-t [gb] Date 20.07.11 17:41 UTC
Merlot, this is the stuff nightmares are made of for me.  I hope none of you end up too traumatised and get over it pretty quickly xx
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 20.07.11 17:50 UTC
I tend to meet up with a few wasps on our normal daily walk. The number of times I have wondered why one of the dogs had its tail up high before realising it had a wasp stuck in its 'trousers' or in the hair on the tail. I hate wasps and tend to carry a dogs comb with me on walks now, just in case we meet up with the horrid things.
- By mastifflover Date 20.07.11 19:05 UTC
Oh no, what a horible experience to have :(

I hope all lumps, bumps & soreness clears up quickly.

Gosh, that must have been so frightening......

Glad everyone has got away without too many problems.
- By dexter [gb] Date 20.07.11 19:10 UTC
That's terrible Aileen, glad your all ok.
Where were you walking?
- By sleepwhatsleep [gb] Date 20.07.11 19:43 UTC
Oh god that made me gag and shiver!!!!

I am absolutely petrified of wasps and the more I seem to panic, flap about and run away the more they chase me.

I'm so glad you are all recovering.
- By Mort [gb] Date 21.07.11 10:02 UTC
I am so pleased you are all well and hopefully not too traumatised. I respect all creatures and genuinely wouldn't kill a fly, but I would a wasp!! I hate them with a passion after a similar incident to yours (although not as bad as you have gone through).
On a second occasion walking in woodland a wasp flew at me and stung me on the corner of my eye, I had to dash to the chemist for treatment. They seem to attack for no apparent reason, but not if I get 'em first!!
