Hello folks.  I currently have 2 pugs one boy and one girl....both neutured. We are getting a french bulldog but cannot decide which sex would be better for living with my existing dogs.  I have previously owned a male frenchie who was aggressive with my pug but not with my late rottweilers. My frenchie died in 2009 and we miss having one. My frenchie was nasty before and after being castrated so nothing changed after he was done. I know being a bull breed they can be stubborn and tenacious.  I would like a male but worried of a repeat performance. I know girls can be nasty too. My heads spinning now. Any advice please . xx

if your frenchie was nasty before and after neutering, why do you want another frenchie? just curious

99% of the time he was an angel...very funny and adored every one. Just occasionally he would go into a rage with my pug and beat him up. I love the breed and want another one.

All the Frenchies I have met have been evil with other dogs. OK, it's only 3 or 4, so that's not a representative sample ;) but I wouldn't want to add one to a stable mix. :(

Conflicted on this one.  I know one "family" of Frenchies who are consistently on edge with each other, often resorting to bullying and fighting among themselves.  However, there are quite a few Frenchies who come to our "Pugs in the Park" events who happily play with all the manic pugs flying around, with no hint of trouble.  So I think it comes down to thorough research with the breeder and getting to know the temperaments of their dogs.  It would seem that some lines are much more placid than others. Temperament wise, the bunch who come to our Pug events don't seem to vary much between the girls and boys behaviour wise.

thanks Gwen. The pups mum is her most laid back bitch of her 3 that she has. Her male is great unless bitch on heat and then she keeps him apart from her other boys. They appear to be a mixed bag of temperaments in this breed don't they. x

Hi, I have had 4 Frenchies in the last 3 years - 2 pieds and 2 brindles - have 2 at the moment. 3 have been boys and 1 a girl- Had a boy, added a boy, lost a boy, added a girl, lost the boy, added a boy.
All of them have been an absolute pleasure to own and take anywhere. If anything, the boys have been more interested in meeting and greeting other dogs, with no issues where as the girl raises her hackles but doesn't bark or try anything and once she's had a sniff, she's fine. I have found the pieds to be more boisterous ( both boys) and the brindles to be the most affectionate with the girl even more so and want to be glued to my side! :-D with both her and the brindle boy being the most gentle and easiest to train.
Frenchies would far rather be with humans than other dogs IMO and some are rather dog unfriendly. Of the people I know with dog unfriendly Frenchies - they are boys, neutered and intact. On the other hand, I know people with 2, 3, 4 of them with no trouble at all.

I'm not sure if dog unfriendliness is down to the lines or just the individual personality of the dog itself. If buying from a good showing home, you can ask about previous litters and their temperaments and at the very least, you would check the bitch's and stud's characters.

thankyou for you comment. that has been helpful. I think we will go for a girl this time....socialise her well and make sure she doesnt get away with being too bossy. Well we can try anyway... I know they are a stubborn breed from personal experience. Its taken me a while to find such a nice litter that has been bred with care and thought. thanks again x

You're welcome ellywelly. Can't wait to add another myself...but OH says we have to wait a year or two!!!!!! ;-) What colour are you getting? Before we got our first, we wanted a fawn...but we fell in love with the brindles and would really love a well marked one! :-D

there are 2 fawn bitches, 1 dark brindle bitch and 1 fawn dog in litter. lady giving me pick of litter which am thrilled about. they are beautifully marked. the baby brindle is already stunning at 3 weeks old. sire is an hungarian import, with an incredible head and lots of bone. nice to see frenchies that do not look like boston terriers...lol. xx

My 1st boy Louis was from a hungarian import - he was truly beautiful and a temperament to die for - he got us hooked! lol.

If you are going to show, you can't go far wrong with a good brindle! ;-)

Sounds like your going for the Brindle girl ;)

Hi, I just brought my female Frenchie home a month ago. She's 13 weeks now. I am a registered nurse, but worked at a large, privately owned veterinary hospital for 7+ years until 2007. I fell in love with the breed when I met a retired show stud in 2000. I thought that I would have to have a male to recreate the love and bond that I  had with "Mickey"(who has passed). However, I had the honor of taking care of both males and females, assisting in cesarean sections, routine vet visits, surgeries, etc., and the main difference that I have noticed between the sexes is the males have a broader head and are more curious.

The most important thing, I feel, when looking for a Frenchie addition is that one finds a breeder that loves his/her dogs, ask-Can I meet mom, dad, both? What is the breeder's goal in breeding Frenchies? Are they breeding for show, health, or the Frenchie traits that make them great companion animals, or all? Research about Merles, and be sure that they arent breeding 2 Merles together. Did they take the time to really get to know you and your family situation? I spent over 16 hours on the phone with the breeder and drove 6 hours away for my puppy because neither myself or breeder was willing to ship our puppy. My girl is affectionate, playful especially with my six year old son, friendly to neighborhood dogs, knows 10+ commands like "wait" "sit" "come" "lay down" "sit pretty" "speak" "pick up toys" "drop it" and we're working on "roll over".

I live with my DH and son and I feel that the testosterone/estrogen level is balanced out more with our girl, but I honestly don't think that there's a huge difference in the sexes as long as you find the right breeder, lots of good food, attention, patience and socialization and spay or neuter-in my opinion, around 8-10 months old. Best Regards.
