Topic Dog Boards / Health / GSD Ears Gone Floppy
- By BoxingPhoebe [gb] Date 12.07.11 08:52 UTC
Hello - my sister has asked me to post this as she is IT illiterate :)

She has a GSD puppy and her ears which were previously erect have now gone floppy; she was stung by a bee about a week ago, following the sting her ears swelled at top half of them then the following day both ears were down, there is a scab area in each ear which the vet gave her some anti-inflammatory steroid based cream to apply twice daily... The question my sister would like answered is will her ears go back up??  Or will they stay floppy now??

Thank you

Hi, its most likely the puppy is teething, as a rule if the ears have been up they should go back up once the pup has finished teething.

Agree, however if the pup is not changing teeth then there may be a problem and another visit to the vet is in order.

How old is the puppy?more than likely due to teething. It will help to give the puppy something to chew as this can help stimulate the ears.
Always if concerned ask the vets for advice.Ouch a bee sting, nasty.

As others have said..if the pup is around 15 weeks or older then it is likely to be teething & this effects ears in all sorts of ways with alot of breeds. As someone else has said if they were erect then they should return once the adult teeth are complete(around 5 months)or possibly sooner.

She's only 11 weeks old, I think that's too young to be teething - ty

Oh and she went to the vets; they said they MAY come back up....

At 11 weeks GSD ears can be all over the place...I wouldn't even be slightly concerned.

Agree, at 11 weeks old they will be all over the place both up, both down or one up and then the other, don't worry.

Thank you; I've passed your comments on, she is reassured now :) no need to rename her floppsie lol

wow a real baby poor thing fancy getting stung. Nope I wouldnt worry either they will be all over the place for a few weeks yet. The bit I like is when they hold them up so they support each other like a pointy hat then when they are tired their ears flop again

One of my big boned Malamutes ears didn't fully come up until 8 months :0

My Gsd is nearly 7 months old  and had one ear erect and the other down, it was very floppy, did begin to wonder if it would stand up, she has had lots of things to chew and now the ear is up, she just has to grow into them now, just give it time.

I've got a Malinois bitch like that aged 5 years!! (They're fully up, just converging, never separated. My original bitch had 3 pups like that from two different litters. Thankfully it's not appeared in the grandchildren as it really puts the judges off LOL.)

so cute when they are first learning to hold them up

Some one told me years ago it was a lack of calcium.

Not sure how true it is though.

Make sure she has lots to chew, the muscles in the jaw are somehow connected to the muscles in the ears.....stag bars are great, they appear to be quite expensive however our 12 month old GSD has had his for nearly 4 weeks now and not even dented it, and hes a very heavy chewer!!
