Topic Other Boards / Foo / Which Iron would you recommend?

Am in need of a new iron, ideally one that I can put water in & steam comes out of the bottom.  Ceramic plate, but other than that I'm no expert.  Not a fan of ironing but sadly there is always a pile to be done.  Any recommendations gratefully received (other than finding someone to do my ironing of course ;-) )

Can't really advise about brands but I will always have a steam generator iron now.  When my last steam generator iron broke I couldn't afford another straight away so bought an ordinary iron and it was rubbish compared to the old one so went and bought another steam generator and love it (well as much as you can love an iron!!).  it's quicker, more efficient and you don't have to fill it with water every two minutes.

If you are in a heavy limescale area, buy the cheapest possible :) I've never found an iron that lasted very long before permanently clogging up (decide doing everything in the instructions to keep it clear), so I buy the cheapest (well, reasonably cheapest - last one was a reduced in Argos as they had discontinued the model) and then throw it away when it's had it :) :) :) Certainly wouldn't buy a steam generator in a heavy limescale area :) :) :) (Or in any area come to that - my ironing doesn't last long enough to be fed up with the iron or justify the cost :) :) :) )

I have a Hoover steam iron - metal plate, not ceramic. However it was given to me second-hand in 1981 and still works well. :-) I'm willing to bet that the model's been discontinued! :-D

I've got a philips steam iron, its about 8yrs old now and it's as good now as when it was new. It's not ceramic but is teflon coated. I hate ironing with a passion and like to get it done as quickly as I can with as little effort as possible lol

My father bought me a ' Domena' steam press iron.
I have never looked back, ironing that was dreaded all morning or afternoon or evening job, is now done in less than an hour, simply fold stuff and press.
Strongly recommend to anyone.
However I have a friend who would say..............dont iron..........she really doesnt.

I have a tefal steam generator, which has been ok for years,I always use water that has been boiled previously to fill it,to help stop it getting furred up,we have very hard water.I have also cleaned it with kettle cleaner a couple of times.I think it is well worth paying the extra to get the generator type,it makes the chore of ironing so much quicker and easier, anything that saves time has to be a good investment!I can remember when we all ironed table cloths, tray cloths, tea towels not to mention all the starched shirts etc, thank goodness for modern fabrics and tumble driers!

I have a Philips Steam Generator too, and Bristol is a hard water area but this one has a filter on the side, it's been going strong now for 3 years and wouldn't have any other.

I recently bought a Morphy Richards Comfort Grip - half price at Robert Dyas.  Very pleased with it, loads of steam which makes the job easier.

Thanks everyone, bought one off Amazon that had good reviews, who knows if it'll iron, perhaps I'll give ironing up for the whole of July!
