Hi, having never heard a dog with Kennel cough I was wondering if someone good give me an explanation of symptoms, before I can contact the vets when they open. Our dog started making an awful noise at 4:30 this morning, I rushed down thinking she was being sick. Although she was retching she was making a very deep sounding hacking noise aswell. My 1st worry was that she had eaten something and it was stuck, but after a couple of minutes she stopped trotted into garden for a wee then in for a biscuit! She has since had 2 more episodes although for not as long. She is eating and drinking fine.
Thanks.

Thanks, took her to vets first thing and they came out and saw her in the car. They are pretty sure it's kennel cough and have given her some antibiotics. She has moments of feeling sorry for herself and then seems a bit brighter. Fingers crossed it will pass quickly, she is young and fit.

She seems much brighter today, hardly any coughing and wanting to play, which she hasn't done all weekend. Just wondering how long to avoid walking her for? I don't want her to over do it or obviously spread it to other dogs in the area. Thanks.

What did your vet say?
When my dog, and a few others I know, got kc recently we were all given different advice by our vets. We were all told to wait until the coughing stopped then my vet said I should wait for 2 clear (no coughing) days before mixing with other dogs; another owner was told 10 days; another told 14 !!

The vet said a couple of days after coughing, but then someone else said to me today should be at least a week after coughing stops, I guess I should go with what the vet said.
Thanks.

If a dog had KC I would not want it near my dogs for a couple of weeks to be sure.

For entering shows, a dog has to be at least 21 days clear & thats what I would go on personally.

Also you can give Benylin junior for chesty coughs three time a day really helps.
Don't rule out lung worm either, might be worth getting her dosed for that too as a precaution.

Thanks everyone. She hasn't coughed now for 3 days and is definitely back to her usual bouncy self! She has Advocate monthly as we are in a high lungworm area and she will eat anything and everything!!
