Topic Dog Boards / General / 6 week old staff pup - in need of a rant.....
- By Susiebell [gb] Date 04.06.11 06:37 UTC
Sorry just needed somewhere to vent as very few people will understand my frustfration the way you guys will

A neighbour brought over her new pup to show to me yesterday and to ask for some advice

Pup is a 'pure staff' so she kept reminding me 6 weeks old & not yet weaned.
She's been feeding it cows milk today breeder told her the puppy wouldn't know the difference
Mum of pups is now ill so breeder is selling them off quick incase they catch it (don't know what 'it' is as all pups need to be sold first to pay to take bitch to the vet)
Breeder was so good she was given flea treatment for it for free (bob martin pet shop stuff)
Bitch has never needed to go to the vets so they didn't need health testing
Oh and puppy has a broken tail at a right angle not from birth from being shut in a door.....
Apparently breeder gave her loads of advice (nothing in writing though) and it was £250 a girl, £150 a boy and £50 discount for the broken tail so she got a bargain

She even got to meet both mum and dad as the litter was as a result of the breeder not realising the male dog would mate the bitch as when she first bought him home he didn't so she figured it'd be fine (clearly having no idea of seasons)

As always someone makes some money and these poor pups have to pay the price

Just makes me so mad - I couldn't think of a more un-suitable owner for the pup (other than the breeder) poor staff's always bear the brunt of the un-educated dog buyer.  I don't know how reputable staff breeders do it must drive them insane!

Apologies - rant over :(

This type of breeder will no doubt be featured in 'The Sequel' and the claim will be this breeder is a show person, or they will feature as the best type of breeder!

I know exactly how you feel about this having had a staff pup brought into the vets which was way too young to be away from Mum.

I would be ranting too. Makes my blood boil when I hear of such ignorance and it is the dogs who suffer.

I presume these are unregistered pups.

Giving the poor thing cows milk isn't going to help it.

I hope she isn't letting it run loose till its been vaccinated or she will have a very sick pup on her hands.

At least she came to show you and ask for your advice, at least that is a plus, did you put her right on everything and will she listen to your advice?

I'm afraid a big part of me would feel like closing the front door as people don't listen and your the one left feeling upset over irresponsible people and animals which are suffering and you can't do anything, very unfair.

Hopefully the pup is on it's way to the vet, who she may listen to better than yourself, the pup needs a full check up, proper wormer etc.

I wonder what is wrong with the dam and hope it is nothing that would be passed onto the pups, with such bad care who knows what could be lurking.

People don't learn do they, once again....... you get what you pay for.

Sadly there are tons of idiot breeders out there wanting quick & easy money. Lets face it the type of breeder you mention will make money as no investment nor time put in.

I think equally annoyingly that there are also too many idiots who are still willing to buy from such breeders :-(

At least idiot buyer does have someone they can seek advice from ;-)

Equally sadly there are those sections of the media who encourage people to buy from "breeders" (for want of a better word) like this by suggesting that anything bred by a responsible breeder, who will as part of the breeding programme have their stock assessed at a show or used for working or trialling, will be a mutant and bound to be both lame and unhealthy, is it any wonder that people are buying from puppy farms and bank book breeders poor fools think it is the way to go.

Yeah, she seemed to take some of it onboard and I gave her lactol for the pup which she promised to use instead of cows milk.

I've told her to book it in to the vets - but I know she ended up with 10 cats due to not bothering to spay them so I don't know if she'll listen.

She's in this situation because  she's irresponsible and didn't bother doing any research - it is completely her own fault.  Lots of people could buy from people like this and get a cheap pup but they do their research and then basically pitch themselves to the breeder persuading the breeder they are good enough and know enough to take care of one of their babies.  I've always been of the opinion when we've been interested in puppies that we have to show the breeders we're good enough to have a pup, that we've done our research, know how to care for it, that our vet feels we're prepared etc.
The idea of people flogging puppies like fruit of a market stall just is a bit hard to swallow.

It infuriates me because the poor pup is going to be the one that pays the price.  The womans little girl told me that the pups mum had the flu - but the mum just said it was just sick.  Either way poor pup really hasn't had the best start

But on the plus we got some photos of our 6 month old pups sent from some of the new owners this morning and they look absolutely brilliant, so healthy and happy :)

Our friends have a neutered (at 5 months) Staff boy (now 3 years old, poor social skills and never gets off lead because of it) who they had at FIVE WEEKS from a neighbour as he was too wingy and driving her mad.

The only excuse this breeder had was the puppies were unexpected as they bought the bitch from her owner as they had mated her and the vet said she wasn't pregnant so they re-homed her.

As  a Staff owner of a fair few years I sometimes feel like smacking my head against a wall .....I despair honestly.  Hope things turn out okay for your neighbour and the pup.

I really hope she gets bored of the pup quite quickly and asks me if I know anywhere to rehome it.......

Luckily some staff's are owned by lovely caring, responsible people but it just seems that poor staff's more than any other breeders seem to get the rough end of the deal.
