Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Complete Newbie Question!

I had pretty much counted out showing my Bullmastiff puppy as although I love her to bits I can see a fault or two when I look at her. However,  I still have some vague dreams of her competing and doing brilliantly!!

I have just seen some posters around town for a show that is happening locally; it is in aid of charity and has competitions for pedigree dogs and crossbreeds so I am guessing its not really a serious show so I am tempted to take her along. The wording though makes me think that some of it may be a proper show but I just dont know enough to have a clue - I have emailed Tillys breeder to ask her what she thinks so am waiting for her advice and I sent the email address on the poster a quick email asking them too but as its a bank holiday weekend I think both may be slow getting back to me.

I was wondering if anyone had heard of it and knew if I was right about it being a bit of fun or whether it was a serious show and Tilly and I would be laughed out of the place! The details I took from the poster are... Limited Show & Companion Dog Show same day/same venue, Amelia Trust Farm, Barry.

10am - Barry, Penarth & South Glamorgan Canine Society - Limited Show Judge Mrs Julie Williams (TRrebettyn)
12 noon - Companion Dog Show in aid of Help for Heroes

A Limit show is usually limited to the members of the organising society, and dogs with certain awards cannot enter, plus you have to enter in advance and all dogs have to be KC registered. A companion show we often call "fun" show, they are held for charity fund raising and they are not serious at all and any dog can take part whether registered or not. You will find pet owners whose dog has never been to a show, some more experienced exhibitors who take youngsters out for a bit of practice, and everything else in between. Again dogs with certain awards are not allowed to enter the pedigree classes (such as CCs, Junior Warrant etc) but they are allowed to enter the novelty classes like "waggiest tail" and the like. It really is just a bit of fun, I'd never take any result seriously (the judge isn't necessarily even a judge, many are just local breeders and exhibitors who do not judge at other shows) but it is a bit of fun and good experience for both you and the dog.

So I could go to the afternoon part for a bit of fun and enter the novelty classes just to see if Tilly likes it whereas the morning would be for the people who are members of the club then if I am reading that right? Do they usually allow people to watch the morning type of shows if they have dogs with them as I think it could be quite interesting for me to see if it is something that I would really like to do?

Forgot to say thanks for the replys

I think Tilly would love just going there as there would be lots of people and dogs for her to meet - she just loves attention! I have been to the farm with my son and the woodland walks are lovely so we could do that if all else fails.

How old is Tilly? she must be 6 months to compete in a Limit show (Not 100% sure about a companion show)

Companion show under KC rules are also 6 months.

She was born 26/01/11 and the show is 31/07/11 26 weeks and 4 days. How do they count months if its 4 weeks to a month then she will be 6 months 2 weeks and 4 days if its calendar months she scrapes in with 6 months and 5 days!

Anyone know how to join the club to have a go at the pedigree ones? I can't find a website only an email addy and a telephone number. Anyone on here a member?
- By Paula Dal [gb] Date 28.05.11 22:20 UTC
she will be classed as 6 months on 26th July and then increase to 7 months on 26th August and so on each month. (doesn't matter how many weeks in the month.)

You don't have to be a member to enter Pedigree classes at a fun/companiuon dog show - only an actual Limit Show.  The classes you list here sound like they are all the fun part of the show

hi the classes you have listed are the fun classes and are judged by Mrs Claire Thomas (Simonite) and they are in the afternoon, come along and have a great day
