Topic Dog Boards / General / Petplan's featured breeder!!!

Anyone else read the petplan monthly e-newsletter?  I don't usually give it more than a glance, but this month I scrolled down and read the featured Breeder spot - horrified does not even come close, I had previously considered Petplan to be a fairly dog savvy, breeder friendly company, but never taken much notice of this spot before so don't know if this one stands out form the crowd?

The "breeder" featured had a pregnant pug having visited a "local" dog, and was amazed and completely unprepared to find that when whelping the bitch took no interest at all in the newborn pups - just left them in the bags!  The breeder and her 8 year old daughter set about cleaning up the pups and were equally surprised to find the bitch refused to feed them.  She had to go out to a pet shop to collect milk replacement, bottles etc and hand reared with the help of the 8 year old.  That petplan should give publicity to such lack of knowledge and preparation by the breeder beggars belief!  Even rudimentary research on the breed will tell you they are often not good Mums, and the vast majority will not involve themselves in the cleanig process after delivery,  then not to have basic essentials on hand in case of problems.

I think you need to contact them about it.

Missed that -like you I quickly scan it then delete. Gosh I bet many of us should be breeder of the month then!  I think easily 50 % of my litters of kittens end with me having to at least top up some kittens with a bottle (I pride myself on having fewer losses than many in my breeds), removing sacks and cutting cords is the norm. I have a toy breed litter of pups at the moment and sure enough I had to remove all sacks, cut all cords and now the bitch is short of milk (otherwise an excellent mum) so I am bottle feeding.  That's being a breeder and there's no need to shout about it, but you should always COUNT on the possibility of needing to do it all.

Agree with Brainless they need to be contacted what hope is there if a big company like that are giving 'space' to such lack of understanding?

I am writing a letter of complaint, but have had to give myself a couple of days to cool down so it is not to emotional!

It came as an email newsletter Olive1, so I can't do a link, I could copy and paste but don't have permission to do so, don't want to infringe copyrights.
