Topic Dog Boards / General / Finding an older GSD.

I moved house on28th February and 2 days later had to have my beloved bitch pts. Too painful to even post on here. Since her death my male gsd who is 9, has changed. We walk 2 hours a day and he no longer runs, doesn't want to spend any time in the garden during the day, will only spend time out there at night to watch for the fox. When the bitch was here they would have a daily play in the garden and
also during our walks. There are signs of the old Milo when he sees another dog. He as always lived with a companion.

I have been looking at various gsd resdcue sites, but most seem to have behavioural issues - some quite serious. My bitch came to me a few months before her 5th birthday from a kennel which was then showing and breeding. She would have been 13 on 7th May. The breeder wanted room for a younger bitch.

If anyone on here hears from anyone at the shows that they have an older dog (gsd) who they would like to re-home, I would be grateful to be considered.  I am thinking that a dog doing ringcraft and going to shows is less likely to have behaviour problems. I could take my dogs anywhere together without a worry.

Just one last thought; he has only lived with bitches. Has anyone brought an older male into the household with an existing older male. Do you think it would be best to stay with a bitch? (sorry this is so long a post)

Freja.

I would contact your local GSD bred clubs, the secretary may well know of someone willing to re-home an ex show dog, have you tried Freja's breeder, with knowing you they may have another they would be willing to let you home, or know someone else who might.

Breeders also sadly get dogs they bred back for re-homing, often through no fault of their own, especially at the moment with wives having to work full time due to the economic climate (I had one back at 4 years of age in January), divorce or a death fo the main carer.

it varies with individual dogs, many GSD's do fine with other males, but your more likely to get a good fit with another bitch.

I can tell you where there is an older GSD bitch up for rehoming now that she is no longer any good for breeding. She has lived her life in a poor kennel situation. She will not have been taken out anywhere or socialised but lives with other bitches at the moment. I have mixed feelings about rescuing dogs like this as it is an easy way out for the breeder but I do feel very sorry for the dogs concerned.

That sounds like a commercial breeding kennel bitch (a real rescue) rather than a socialised ex show bitch ( a re-homing), the OP wants ones without 'issues' which sadly this bitch is very likely to have :(.

Brainless,Thank you so much for your reply. You understand perfectly my reasons for prefering a dog from a decent breeder who shows. My male is castrated so there is no problem with an unspayed bitch. Having said that, when I went to the kennels to see her I noticed that her vulva looked swollen but was told it was because she had recently had her 3rd litter,(14 weeks on) - she came in season 2 days later and he did know! This breeder no longer shows and I don't care for the way she is breeding now. I did have my dear faithful girl spayed but had to wait the three months before doing so. My male is such a nice dog, loves everybody,I would like him to have a nice companion.old enough to exercise with now and see him through his remaining years. Thanks Brainless.

I also feel very sorry for dogs in this situation and if I didn't have a dog, would definitely have a rescue as would have the time to sort out behavioural issues. But, as the dog I have now may not have many years left, I want to find the best for him and for me.

What area are you in? If anywhere near the NW I can give you the number of a friend, who might be able to help or put you in touch with someone who can.

Freja - whereabouts are you? A friend of mine was telling me about a GSD bitch that needed a new home due to the death of her owner. If you want to pm me, I'll try to find more details.

That's a shame. It might be worth contacting Helen Bibby of Silkenwood GSD's (www.silkenwoodgsd.co.uk) or Carol Eastwood of Antilli GSD's (www.antilligsd.com) and seeing if they know anyone in your area.

Thanks for that goldiemad. There is a strong possibility that the right girl may just have appeared, so, until I know for sure I shall hold back on contacting anyone else at the moment.
