Hi.  I am new to this so not sure what Im doing.  My bitch is on 0.5 mg of soloxine once a day for a slightly underactive thyroid.  I have read on the internet that many things affect soloxine including vitamin tablets.  My bitch has been put on course of synulox antibiotics for an infection and I would like to put her on garlic capsules.  Does anyone know if the synulox and garlic capsules will affect the soloxine?

I have an elderly bitch on very high dose thyroid treatment.  She still gets herbs that I would normally give to my oldies.

Garlic is natural, I see no reason for you to worry about it affecting conventional medicines.

I have two dogs on Soloxine. I asked my vets when my dog first started on it whether there was any medication I had to be careful with now; he said no. Soloxine is a hormone supplement so shouldn't interfer with any other medication. But if in doubt, ask your vet.

What does affect the absorbtion of soloxine is calcium, so you should not give the soloxine together with food as calcium will bind it and then make it less absorbably. You should give soloxine at least one hour before food or three hours after food.

Hi , I'm interested in this ,my newf has been on this for 2 years now, and i never knew it was not to be given with food .  I always put her (1 a day 0.8) tab in her evening meal.I will start giving it to her mid morning with a titbit.

Soloxine should be given twice a day to avoid a low period; if you give it with a titbit, make sure it is a calcium free one. Personally I just drop the tablet down their throat and they swallow it that way without food. :-)

I dont know about garlic but just because its a natural body hormone thats normally produced thats being replaced doesnt mean nothing interferes with it when its not naturaly produced as soya does interfere with the way the body uses thyroxine if you take it in humans and would check if same applies in dogs too where soya is in food as often even a tiny adjustment in dose can make a big difference.

Thanks for that JeanSW I was hoping that garlic wouldnt affect her soloxine tablets

Thanks LurcherGirl.  That is very useful. My bitch has only been on soloxine for a few months so I dont really know a lot about it.  I have been looking around the internet to learn more about soloxine.  I mentioned to my vet that it says to give the medication twice a day to avoid peaks and valleys, but she told me to keep giving it once a day.  I already do give her her medication on an empty stomach.

Unfortunately this is one of the areas where particularly older vets aren't up to date. The recommendation was originally once a day for soloxine, however, new research shows that the half life of soloxine is only about half a day, so it is important to give it twice a day not once.

Hi LurcherGirl, My bitch is on 0.5 mg once a day.  3 hours after tablet her total T4 is 63, 6 hours after tablet her total T4 is 36.5.  What does half life mean?

Totally agree.  My vet actually emphasised the need for the doses to be 12 hours apart.

What does half life mean?

It means that by that time, only half of the soloxine is in the body, and this is about 12 hours if I remember correctly. So if you space it out 24 hours, there will be half a day where your dog has less than half of the soloxine in his body. If you space it out 12 hours, it is never less than half and stays topped up. :-)

Hi JeanSW.  Thank you for the link.  Could you tell me please where I go after I click on the link.

Im going to give an example.  Say a dog is on 0.8 mg of soloxine once a day.  If it gets 0.4 mg twice a day.  Does this have the same effect?  Sorry I dont mean to sound stupid.

Sorry RubyC - it's not a link!  :-(

It's something that appears to come up whenever I take a quote from someone else's post.  It's been happening since I upgraded to IE9.

Yes, that's how it works. :-)

Thanks LurcherGirl for your help.

oh my girl is on 0.8 Soloxine
This is her 4th day, would you say to halve the tablet and give 2 x a day then?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.05.11 13:25 UTC
that would keep the levels more balanced.

Sorry for offtopic - Jean this has been happening for a while on mine.  You just need to edit and delete everything before the >  A nuisance but worth it to keep the quote clutter free :)

Clever Clogs!!!   :-)  :-)  :-)

Thanks, it works, I just replied to you on another post.  Tried it out - and bingo!
