Topic Dog Boards / Health / bleeding bitch not in season!
- By Zebedee [gb] Date 03.05.11 21:58 UTC
Hi all,
My whippet bitch had a c-section in mid September of last last year. All went as well as can be expected. In mid February this year she had a season although this was not the 7 month cycle she normally has but i put down to pregnancy etc. Two weeks after her season had finished she was losing a small amount of brown/bloody discharge. Took her to the vets same day that i noticed and she was given an ultrasound scan but they couldnt see anything untoward so did not think it was pyometra. She was given antibiotics as a precautionary. All seemed ok. However today some two odd months since her last trip to the vets she has blood around her vulva. I want to have her spay but was advised to wait between seasons. Her vulva is not swollen at all so surely can't be having another season so soon and i am beside my self with worry as to what on earth could be going on.
I will be taking her to the vets tomorrow. Would it be a good time to have her spay now while she is bleeding or to wait until this episode is over with another course of antibiotics?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Maybe she has an infection going on?  Its good you are taking her for a check up.

Our vet generally wont spey, as you say, he likes to do them inbetween seasons, but when my bitch had her pups in September, she was bleeding heavily and when the pups were 10 days old, she had to have an emergency spey because she was getting very anaemic and the iron tablets were not working enough to stop the bleeding.  It turned out that she had a ruptured artery in her uterine horn.

So even though her uterus was obviously still enlarged and her hormone level was high from having pups, he speyed her as we didnt really have a choice.  So surgery is possible if you are worried, its just slightly more risky with an enlarged uterus.

Maybe they will scan her again for you to see if anything has changed inside.  Hope you get on ok though x
