Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Where you do buy your raw food from?
- By parrysite [gb] Date 02.05.11 15:39 UTC
What companies do people use/recommend for supplying raw food? I'm particularly looking the Raw Meaty Bones style rather than BARF. Is there any companies that supply it weekly/monthly or does everyone just use stuff from local supermarkets/butchers?
- By furriefriends Date 02.05.11 16:53 UTC
dog food company and albion addition from sainsburys :) both supply on a fortnightly basis I believe min ordef from the dog food company £20.00 not sure with albion

Mainly TPMS (who deliver to my area every fortnight) supplemented by the occasional pet food shop for beef chunks (Prize Choice).  I also buy reduced meat bargains from the supermarkets when I see them.

The dog food company's price list really shows how much cheaper raw feeding is! I don't even have the first idea where I'd get a whole rabbit from around here but they are only £2.

Thanks for the information guys!

Mince (for the cats, and to wean pups on) from Prize Choice, all the meat and bones for the dogs from the butcher.

"The Dog Food Company" and also "Raw to Go".

Landywoods :) I find their meat is really good quality and isnt as watery and mushy as other companies and they are very generous on the amounts they fit into a 1lb bag ;) I get my bones and "bits" from the local Farm Shop and a few local butchers.  Offal I pick up when its on offer in Morrisons, I also pick up some lamb bones from Morrisons when they have them.

just remember that scotts rabbit (dog food company) is just that whole rabbit as if in the fields. Mine were not impressed even after I had skinned it ended up giving them away to a friend with less fussy dogs lol
- By mommaduck [gb] Date 02.05.11 18:59 UTC
Does the Dog Food Company deliver country wide or is it pick up only? Thanks
- By furriefriends Date 02.05.11 19:03 UTC
think they cover most of the country. He comes down to me in croydon. Just goofle to find his websiteg
- By mommaduck [gb] Date 02.05.11 19:10 UTC
Furriefriends, thanks.

It is not clear on the website how far they deliver. I am in Cheshire which is a fair way. I'll email them for confirmation.

Landywoods :-) I find their meat is really good quality and isnt as watery and mushy as other companies and they are very generous on the amounts they fit into a 1lb bag ;-)
I have a friend who uses Landywoods but their website isn't particularly clear and I didn't have much time to examine it so will have another look now. What meat do you get from Landywoods? Is it their mince?

Not too sure I could cope with skinning a rabbit! The raw meat thing is going to take some getting used to with me being a veggie but it is something I am going to have to cope with if I want to raise a healthy dog. Think I'd prefer a 'pre prepared' rabbit. Can't blame your dogs for being fussy ;)

Thanks for the advice everyone, it really is appreciated. Keep it coming! ha ha!

I know,parrysite-I tried to order minced rabbit from rawtogo, but Lesley said she was having trouble getting it,and offered whole rabbit instead,I  replied, thanks but I dont think I could cope with whole bunny.Im veggy too,but oddly enough,Im not too bad feeding the dogs raw meat, apart from the occasional"euw!"Landywoods do chunked meat, too, mine love the poultry necks-they also sell bags of marrowbones and lamb bones.

yes, I get their mince (apart from the chicken, it just smells funny although the dogs never had a problem eating it !!) and tripe chunks, I dont bother with necks etc as I get all that cheaper from the butchers.
- By parrysite [gb] Date 02.05.11 22:42 UTC
Do you find that butchers all sell necks and carcases? I've never seen them at any butchers before and always assumed these bits got thrown away.
- By MsTemeraire Date 02.05.11 22:47 UTC
Many butchers don't do their own processing any more - they just order in the bits they need - gutted and cleaned - and cut them up for sale. It might be worth looking in Yellow Pages to see if you have any poultry processing places around - they'll be where the carcases and necks part company from the whole bird. It is probably easier for the big places to dispose of/sell the unwanted parts in bulk, than it would be for a local butcher, who has to pay for waste removal.

Our farm shop do their own butchering and freeze bags of bones and carcasses. The other butchers I use order them in frozen. People use the bones for stock so its not just dog people that are after them !

The Dog Food Company also does minced rabbit, which is what I get.

use rawtogo here with a bit from natural instinct like lamb spines etc
- By jules264 [gb] Date 03.05.11 13:47 UTC
I use DAF  and my local butcher saves me off cuts .The dogs love the daf food but one of mine won't eat unminced food so doesn't touch the butchers meat. The other thinks "proper" meat(unminced )is great :)

I use The Dog Food Company too, used them almost 2 years now after changing from Landywoods. Scott is really helpful and even let me have an order and pay a week later as I was a bit strapped for cash last month - Really nice of him I thought!

Mine love a whole rabbit, skin and all, but I do get them rabbit mince too - From TDFC. I generally get chicken carcasses from my butcher, along with other bits and bobs, and offal from the supermarket as it's so cheap. But it's worth asking Scott if there is anything in particular you want that isn't on the website, as he can often pick other bits up too, venison mince etc
- By hayley123 Date 04.05.11 09:47 UTC
we get our chicken wings from a wholesales place, and chicken portions from sainsburys their own range frozen chicken portions 2.5 kg bag for i think £3.49
- By furriefriends Date 04.05.11 14:48 UTC
yes i agree scott is very customer focused/ I will have to ask him about the minced rabbit and see if that goes down any better. I like to increase the range of their food whenever possible.

I get my minces and necks, chunky tripe and carcasses from Albion. Unfortunatly Scott does not come down to Somerset.
OH picked up a whole Pheasant from the road (The car he was following hit it) and I gave it to the girls....Shock Horror...No idea what to do with it, even though Merlot has often caught rabbitts in the fields and swallows them practically whole!!
Spratts I get from any fishmongers...or ASDA (A trip to West Bay or Lyme Regis is always fruitfull)  but they are not always easy to find and the girls love them, not so keen on other whole fish, I think they are to big. But feeding them spratts is like feeding sealions!
Albion deliver to me on any Tuesday.

Aileen, what is Albion's minimum order (if any)? I might order from them when I have freezer space depending on their minimum.
- By Merlot [gb] Date 05.05.11 07:25 UTC
I think it's about £ 65...They never seem to worry but I have been with them for a little while now and have aprox the same amount.
Always been very happy with the quality and it's always still well frozen. Delivery bloke is pleasant too.
