Hi can anyone help what i would like to know if both parents are clear from L-2HGA/HC I know litter will be clear! but what about PHPV if the parents havn't or have been test for PHPV will the litter Be clear or do they have to be screen & test for PHPV anyway
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are hardy dogs with few known health problems when acquired from a responsible, reputable breeder. Hip dysplasia, cataracts and luxating patellas are seen in the breed. The inherited eye condition PHPV (Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitroeus) is also a known health issue in Staffordshire Bull Terriers. A hereditary neurological condition, L-2 hydroxyglutaric Aciduria is also present in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed. Prospective owners should choose Staffordshire Bull Terriers bred to the American Kennel Club breed standard, which tend to be healthier than the "giant" Staffordshire Bull Terriers that have become popular in some areas.

Eye Problems
The two common eye problems in Staffordshire Bull Terriers are Hereditary Cataracts (HC) and Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitroeus (PHPV). HC is inherited through a recessive gene, meaning both parents must be carriers in order for a puppy to be affected. Genetic testing has given breeders the ability to eliminate the HC gene from their lines. PHPV, however, has a more complex pattern of inheritance. It is known to be present at birth and is not progressive. It can be detected with an eye exam at six weeks of age. Both HC and PHPV can be surgically corrected.

No as the mode of inheritance for PHPV is not known at present. There are been PHPV affected pups born from PHPV clear parents. The only way to know pups status is to test each individual pup

This article has more info: http://www.dogs.net.au/sirstaffalot/page2.asp

"........The present knowledge of the mode of inheritance of this disease is thought to be an autosomal irregular dominant with variable expression. Due to PHPV seldom resulting in secondary cataracts in the Stafford, those that are mildly afflicted will seldom show any form of visual impairment during the course of their lives.

Even those that are more severely afflicted, may be capable of adapting by using peripheral to compensate......"

The BVA article http://www.bva.co.uk/public/documents/Eye_Leaflet.pdf says of this disease:

"....The mode of inheritance is complex, but the genetic data available suggest an autosomal irregular dominant gene with variable expression. The breeds examined under Schedule A are listed in the table on the right. There are currently no breeds being investigated for this condition under Schedule B......."
"...Congenital inherited ocular disease:  persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous
Certified - Schedule A, Dobermann, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Under Investigation -
Schedule B, Finnish Lapphund..."
