fitted my new ignition barrel and key into my vw and now the immobiliser will not let me start the van
can i take the immobiliser off altogether or is there anything else i can do.
i even tried putting the chip of the old key under the ignition to see if i could fool it into thinking
that the old key was back in use, can't use the old key as it snapped into the barrel

Have you tried the honest john forum? It is really good and the posters are really helpful on there.

Is it a brand new set or a second hand one? If it is brand new it will need programming either by an auto locksmith or vw garage. In most cases it isnt simply a straight forward swap unfortunately. You could try opening the key and swapping the chips over, but you risk damaging it which will cost you even more in the long run. If it is second hand then you will need to get a new key made for the chip to be programable.

Easiest thing is to just swap the chips over (carefully). You can go for programming but VW's can be a bit awkward. Hope you get it sorted.
