Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dogs & Barbecues - A warning for summer.

A friend on another forum has just lost her beloved dog after it ate a wooden kebab skewer at a barbecue. The pieces of wood pierced her intestines and she developed peritonitis and was unsaveable. :-( :-( Sadly this isn't uncommon during the summer months; many barbecue items are terribly risky for dogs. We all know about the risks of cooked bones, and unattended chicken and chop bones are frequently stolen by crafty dogs, but wooden skewers are very tasty because of being soaked in food juices, and corncobs (yummy butter) are well-known for causing impaction in the bowel requiring surgery.

Please let Pebbles' death save others from a similar fate, and make sure all barbecue food and debris is kept safely out of the reach of your dogs.

Oh how sad :(

I also worry about dogs trying to jump up at a BBQ and getting burnt - but then I'm always thinking "what if ..."

Very sad,I would love a BBQbut wont have one as I think they are too dangerous,as my dogs run free.

So sorry.

Sorry for your friends loss, it's one of those things you think will never happen isn't it?

Whenever I have a party or BBQ the dogs are always kept in a separate part of the garden, mainly due to the little monkeys chancing a spot of food raids, children always leave plates of food lying about or drop it on the grass. :-D But, yes, so easy to get hold of a skewer too.  Very sad..........R.I.P Pebbles.

Very sad to hear of this. We had a BBQ on Monday but nothing with sticks or bones is ever on the menu. Too easy for a sneaky dog to pinch something and others are never as carefull as you yourself. Our BBQ's consist of burgers, sausages, chicken breast and things like peppers but never Corn, drumsticks or skewers.
What a tradgedy for the family.

So sorry to hear about your friends dog :(
Thank you for your post, I wouldn't have thought about getting kebabs and things before but now I'll stay well away, you can't be too careful.

Good point to make, as summer approaches, that corn cobs can be fatal if eaten swallowed by dogs. Never leave them lying around, throw them on compost heaps or in kitchen bins if you have a bin 'raider' :( :( My DIL's parents' dog had to be PTS last year following unsuccessful surgery to remove a stuck cob :(

My local park is always awash with corn on the cobs on kebab skewars from KFC and it is a nightmare constantly being on the looking and yelling at them to 'leave'.  In the warmer months I generally take extra poo bags and collect the corn cobs like extra poo.

Sorry to hear about the poor dog.

What a sad thing to happen, poor dog, and owners.
There was a thing on the telly a few weeks ago about a similar situation, although the dog didn't die thankfully, fat from the BBQ was emptied out onto the gravel in the garden and the dog ate the gravel which resulted in a very ill dog and a hefty vets bill.

I just wanted to add that it was actually whilst out walking in a park that this tragedy happened. The owner has been contacted by the park officials who would like to make this story public in the hopes it will reach a lot more people and maybe will help prompt them to dispose of their litter safely. So so sad.

Bouncing this thread, hoping it might prevent another disaster.

Yes very important as we nearly lost Betty as she scavenged a corn on the cob.

It had been festering in her tummy for a couple of weeks before she became very ill .

She had emergency surgery and was very poorly for a couple of weeks afterwards and it was touch and go for a while.

It knocked her for six and it took a few months before she was back to her normal self .

Excellent reminders, especially Corn on the cob as I remember my dad actively feeding the cobs to our dogs when I was young! I thought it was OK but after reading horror stories, I realised different now.
We were looking after a friends dog while she was on holiday and we decided to BBQ(not the dog but it was close!!).  Now, our dogs know not to come onto the patio when food is about as I hate scavenging when we are eating but this dog had no training or manners and lolloped about so the dogs got put behind the gate.  But during the BBQ, he decided to leap the fencing, ignore all commands and run about like an idiot! He ran under the BBQ and singed all the hair on his back!  By the time his owner returned, he was in a local kennels with stripey burnt hair.  Never again!
