Topic Other Boards / Foo / Visit from a puppy :-D

My brother-in-law had just visited us with his puppy. Oh my gosh it's soooooooo cute, Buster loved him too.

It's a malamute/husky/gsd, 10 weeks old and looks like a Malamute. It is aaaaaadooooorable :) :) :) .

I'm not pleased that they got such a cross (nothing against cross-breeds, just the deliberate breeding of them with no health checks and no thought to anything other than the momey - the price they paid seems to suggest that this was not an accidental litter :( ), but the pup is a real cutie and allready has learnt sit & paw. I'm very pleased to see that they are allready using reward-based training :)

Tried to get some piccies of the little fur-ball, but he's such an active little chap that most of my piccies are blurs as he was dashing about investigating the garden!

He seemed a bit nervous of Buster at first, so we gave him half an hour to toddle around the garden and feel a bit more settled, then brought Bust out on his lead (pup loose). Buser is not territorial atall and has no problem with other dogs freely wandering around, he was just pleased to have a dog to say hi to and was very gentle, keeping his play-bows under control (not like the loony he is when he meets his rottie friend) :)

Pup was very vocal, barking his little head off at Buster, but he did appear to be trying to encourage a game of chase with Bust, but as soon as Buster stepped forward, pup looked a bit freaked out & would leg-it with a look of terror on his face, so Bust stayed on-lead so as not to overwhelm pup. Pup got brave enough to come up to Buster, sniff his nose and give him a lick - then leg it!

Hopefully this will become regular, it would be great for Buster to have a play-mate (one that he doesn't get OTT with) and do the little pup the world of good to be socialised with such a big dog as Bust.

Funny how quick one forgets how much work goes into looking after a pup, my home & garden are NOT puppy-proof anymore, and allthough I was in my element following pup around to remove unsafe objects from his mouth (pegs, pebbles, tea-bag thats fallen out of the bin etc.) - I'm glad it was just for an hour!

But I can't wait untill they visit again :-D

Sorry for all the wafffle, but PUPPPPPIES how cute are they!!!!

I got Vic because I managed to convince myself (and the OH haha, the old 'oh but I'll do everything for the puppy routine' came in useful there, what lies I tell!) that since I already had 1 dog another wouldn't take up any more time, it was quite stupid of me and I had clearly forgotten how much work puppies are! Then last year we got Ripley but she was already grown up and is such a good girl she really is no extra work.

Oh what is it about tea-bags!!?? At 6 and 7 my two have not yet grown out of puppyhood *rolls eyes*
Tea-bags and clumps of soil from plants they've up rooted are the bane of my life mind you there is always a little 'hansel and grettle' trail of said offending item to the culprit, so I know who to give the paddington bear hard stare too!! :-D (although culprit usually looks over at innocent dog with the he/she did it stare!!)

Good to hear about Busters' new Partner in crime (Husky/Mal in the mix ooooh there's one little bundle of crime for sure!) can't wait to hear about their shennanigans! (will have the wine ready for you!!)

BIL told us that pup watched all the garden pots being planted with new flowers & plants, waited for his opportunity, then had jolly good fun ripping all the plants back out :-D

My Daisy is so blonde - the mud around her chops gives her away, (just before she rubs her face on my clean cream trousers!)

Ah the picture of a so small cocker having a pooh in a flower pot then dead heading every tulip in sight - thoses were the days. That pup could pooh up hill before he could talk!

In the past few days we have met 2 Mal puppies, both live in our street, from same litter (a neighbour is a 'breeder' :( ).

One is a male, quite out-going and was very happy to meet Buster. Bust, again kept his behaviour tampered down, offering some controlled play-bows and calmly allowing his bum to be sniffed.

The other is the most beatuful female, very nervous of Buster at first, but after about 5 minutes of him being very calm she plucked up the courage to sniff his bum, then his nose. Bust refrained from doing silly playbows and laid on the floor calmly waiting for her to come to him. As she got a bit more confidant with Bust, he did do 2 little play-bows while he was laying down with a muffled play-bark, but these were so carefull that he didn't frighten the pup :)

If anybody has read any of my posts about Buster and his OTT behaviour with his rottie friend, you'll realise why I find his reactions to these pups sooooo amazing.

I thought Busters lack of socialisation with other dogs (he did get one year with our other dog, untill we had to say goodbye to oldie :( ), was the reason he is such a complete loony with his rottie friend, but now I am starting to think this in not the case.
Despite being excited at meeting these pups, he has changed his behaviour with each one according to thier personalities/confidance levels, so his behaviour with the rottie must be (at least, partly) due to the rottie being a rough & tumble, confidant dog :)

Ahhhhh, good boy Buster :-D

The pup came to visit again today :)

Pup marched into our house, off-lead, trotted immediately to the stair gate to greet Buster through it. He was not nervous atall with Buster, they both started play-bowing after a greeting sniff, then pup errupted into barking. Buster joined in with the barking (all play barks from both of them) - bit of a racket!

As they were so eager to play, we decided to let them both loose in the garden - they got on great :-)

Bust was no where near as rough as I thought he would be. Whenever pup felt it was a bit too much for him, he'd lay under a bench/table to have a little break, Bust would sniff him and do a play-bow then pup would come back out.
Pup got so confidant with Buster, that towards the end of thier play time he was launching himself on Bust and even tried to hump him  Things were getting a bit too manic then, so Bust was put in the kitchen to chill out, cool down and have a drink in peace! (they's both managed to knock 2 bowls of water everywhere outside and couldn't decide which of them should be allowed to drink the dregs.)

I am soooooo proud of Bust. I really do not give him enough credit and always think he will be too rough with other dogs, but he was great. He did step on pups toes once, and got a bit carried away and head-butted him accross the patio once  (pup wasn't bothered, and took it all the way it was intended - in play), but overall he was brill and much more gentle than I thought he would be.

As Bust was loose I had my hands free to get some videos and some piccies - yay!

Took a while to scrub all the slobber out of pups lovely, fluffy coat, but he enjoyed the attention :)

Ours are 3 and a half, 3 and almost 2. I might have been mad before but I definitely am now :)

Still hoping for a couple more sometime in the not too distant future and will change the locks first so family can't get in and kill me.
