Hi

Hope this comes out right as i'm new to this forum,  I've just had a look on this website and it looks to me that you pay an excess to the vets and then they get an authorisation code from the insurer to go ahead with the claim, so you dont have to pay the rest of the bill upfront is this correct?? The reason I ask is a lot of vets ask you to pay for the treatment and then claim it back from your insurer. I would be interested in this cover if this was the case.

Hi Pinkyw welcome. Yes it does appear to be that way round. I want to speak to them as I am bit confused how that would work when you take the pet to the vet not knowing if you are going to claim until you see your bill. eg I took my gsd to the vet on monday with a poorly nose the initial bill has come to £41 so assuming we need no more treatment I wont be claiming. Therefore should i have rung them before |I went just in case ?
The other thing I want to query is will they give me an exclusion for all illness that could in theory be covered by annual vaccinations as I dont vaccinate annually . Or does that prevent me from taking out their insurance.
Trouble with that is it puts the insurance companies and drug companies in each others pockets and doesnt give me free choic.
Sorry folks I am not intending to start a vaccination discussion :)

The procedure varies. Some insurance companies are better at paying out promptly, so the vet is usually happy for the owner just to pay the excess and then claim directly from the insurers for the rest of the claim (no authorisation code, just a completed claim form). Other insurance companies are less reliable, and in this case the vet will usually want the owner to pay the bill then reclaim the balance from the insurance company themselves.

Just been browsing on another forum, someone said they had swapped to this firm then another member posted this quote taken from the website small print.

"Policy conditions: the claims administrator may request a second opinion on treatment costs limit treatment in accordance with the second opinion
amend the renewal terms, in exceptional circumstances"

and their policy PDF
"You must arrange for a vet to examine and treat your pet as soon as possible after it shows clinical signs of an injury or an illness. And, if the claims administrator decides, they will refer the case to a vet that they choose."

Depending on how the firm acts it could be worrying.

Mmm that doesnt sound reassuring. have just spoken to more than who my current 4 furries are with and although the online quote was double that of my gsd for my new fcr after discussion they rang me back and have halved the month premium for new pup so it is in line with my gsd.
I am very pleased so will probably stay with them even if the other people are cheaper , more than have always paid  out with exception of one time and dont yet need the ok for claims and seem competitve for my lot.

Petguard came up well, but on another forum someone has made mention that they aren't doing lifetime policies anymore. That will need to be double checked, I moved to them last year and signed up on a lifetime policy, so hoping that they don't change it or i'll be looking for another company to head to and there are very little options with a Bernese.

I've just had a letter from Petguard saying their insurer is no longer providing cover and they cannot find another underwriter for the policy. I'm fortunate in that Teasel has never needed any treatment so I can move her fairly easily but anyone who has a dog with ongoing issues may have a problem finding cover and will lose out as a result! There is infoon the consumer action group site about this if anyone does have an issue with ongoing health problems and this company!

This is quite worrying, I changed mine to Petguard last year, lifetime cover. I have made a claim luckily for nothing ongoing which they paid promptly but I cannot afford not to have lifetime cover insurance. I will be changing insurers now in case my dogs develop any ongoing illnesses and will just have to take the consequences of cancelling mid policy.

Hi Furriefriends

I decided to go with vetsmedicover for my pup currently with KC and their quotes were not far from half the price. Anyway received my credit agreement and i dont like tht for starters but they have some horrendous charges and even if they get your telephone number wrong or if it gets returned! £20 each time and thats on top of your banks charges i suppose, and £20 for every letter they have to send to you and £50 if a cheque bounces. Since reading through the agreement id rather not! so been trying to cancel the agreement. Called the number specified after a while on hold took all my details and then said no you need this number so they put me through after almost 5 mins on hold and this is an 0871 number ive been transferred to motor insurance and they dont have a number to give me and have just sent an email for the pet insurance to call me back ! not happy so if they dont call me back soon ill be more than sour with them.

Trying to get myself straight debt (paying off student overdraft and store cards etc, silly silly i know) wise this year and i do not need a company like this on my back, so my advise is stick with petplan or kc i dont mind paying a little extra.

we had a conversation at club last week and a lot of people do not have insurance for their dogs as they have multipal dogs, and quite a few have opened bank accounts and have had them for years where each week they put money into the account and leave it for the vets and never touch it, mentioned this to my hubby and he said we should do this as well put in a large lump sum to start with and then top it up every week, as he said for years paying insurance and never needed it and sometimes my premiums went up to double what they used to be and i thought why when i have never ever claimed for any of them so we are thinking of cancelling or waiting till our policy is due for renewal and then just put the same amound away into a dog account in the bank

hope you get your insurance problems sorted

I have done that ever since I had more than one dog, also make sure i have a line of credit in emergencies.

In most cases you have to pay the bill anyway and then claim the money back, so yous till need to find the money to pay the bill.

If you buy on line or via telephone I think you are covered by distance selling regulations. You should be able to cancel. C.A.B. should be able to give you this info. Money Saving Expert site is another good place for in fo.

After quite a while on the phone again as they couldn't find me on the system (i didn't get a call back before 3pm so i called them from the sales line on the website) i eventually managed to say im not happy with a credit agreement nor am i happy with some of the terms (they then said you can pay it off in full so that you dont have a credit agreement but i said id rather not)

Scam company

I have one dog insured with VMC and they've sent me a reminder for the renewal and if I continue with them I get an extra month free. Currently they are offering: 10K vets fees per year, Lifelong cover, cover for dental treatment, complementary therapy, 1m 3rd party & £80 excess. I don't remember having a credit agreement with them but have had them from M&S insurance in the past. I can pay this one by direct debit interest free or direct debit. Never claimed so far so I don't know what they're like for that.

I have multiple dogs and have claimed on most of them. Found Virgin very good for settling, beat the KC timewise. I wouldn't be able to save enough per month to cover for big bills - one had a leg op then spine op within 6 weeks totalling nearly £8k (but she's SOOO worth it!).
