Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / best puppy dried food for labrador puppy????????????
- By cumbriamax [gb] Date 23.03.11 14:23 UTC
Hi all,
am due to collect my labrador puppy in approx four weeks and was wondering what was considered best dried food for pups.

previously have fed Royal Canin, eukanuba Iams or bakers- I always considered Royal Canin(RC for short) to be best as they loved it and we bought it from our vets so we assumed it was good stuff. however I read that it is very high in protien and it mainly corn & wheat and Orijen puppy food came out best in an in depth analysis.

so basically just looking for a bit of advice on puppy feeding!

Many thanks in advance!

you need to contact your breeder, they SHOULD give you a detailed diet sheet of what and when to feed your puppy.

Its not a good idea to change food from what the breeder has them on.

but if you do decide to switch later,my friend breeds labs, shes a kc accredited breeder, has always fed her pups on eukanuba puppy, and even a confirmed collie addict such as myself can see the pups do really well on  it.however,I also know someone who raw feeds, and so do those pups!Good luck with your puppy,I hope you have as much fun with him/her as I do with mine!

Do you know what food your breeder uses?

The excitement of a new puppy can stimulate you to think about everything associated with their health and wellbeing but a good breeder will have done this bit for you.  I would expect the breeder to be able and willing to talk to you about what food they use and why they like it.  They should also be able to tell you where they get it from for the best price.

Your pup should come home with a small bag of food but it's a good idea to ask your breeder if they can order you a bit extra, particularly if they get breeders rates.  My breeder organised a bulk buy of fish4dogs for her new owners this time and because we were all ordering 2 or 3 bags we saved a lot of money, and it was one less thing to worry about!

Good luck with the pup, I'll bet you can't wait :)

I fed RC for many years, and all my dogs thrived on it.  But then, I don't have a problem with feeding high protein, to my Collies, or the toys.  The feed I changed to is high protein too.  I once had a puppy buyer stop feeding the RC that I gave her, because she told me that she had read how protein gives them kidney problems!  "Sigh"

I thought that had been disproved many years ago.

I am fairly certain that Wainwrights is Pets At Home own make.  I am sure I've seen positive comments from users on CD too.

Wainrights is Pets at Home. If you don't have a store near you ask you breeder if she will get you a bag - shell be keen you use the same food. Also look on their website as they often do very good offers. If I'm right they do free delivery on orders over £29 ... 1 bag will be over that value.
