Topic Dog Boards / General / What do you look for in a breed club?
- By Helen-Jane Date 22.03.11 10:40 UTC
Hi

The question is simply what is said in the title.  For those of you involved in breed clubs what, apart from love of that breed, attracts you to join?

Are you looking for information on showing etc, are you interested in other activities your breed may be involved in?

Would you be interested in a website that allowed you to post questions specific to your breed?

Any comments, thoughts gratefully received.

For those of you involved in breed clubs what, apart from love of that breed, attracts you to join?

--the support of others who have been in the breed a long time and are happy to share ideas, experience and knowledge
--the social side (we have a fantastic fun weekend every other year which takes enormous effort to organise and is a dream come true for dogs (and me!)
--a chance to learn more about the breed
--the newsletter
--in our club, a chance to learn to work the dogs--I can't imagine a kinder, more encouraging club

Things I would really like: a hands on trimming workshop, handling in the show ring

As someone new to this breed when I started nearly four years ago (where DID that time go!!!), I can never thank them enough and one day when I know a lot more than I do now I hope I'll be a useful volunteer.

I don't know anything about the club you mention but sometimes a long delay can be because your application has to be approved by the committee. If they are not due to meet for another 4 months or more, you can have a long wait! Often you need two existing club members to propose and second you. Many clubs these days have a website where you can download an application form. Websites can be a good place for keeping people updated.

Good communication is a 'must' in my book.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Can anyone recommend good breed club websites for me to have a look at?

In addition to some of the points already mentioned a regularly updated website is a must.

I find it really frustrating when they offer pages of information - such as show dates, and judges - only to find the details aren't updated often enough.  The problem with that is that you soon stop visiting the Club site and you are in danger of missing good info when it finally does come along.

Thanks

I think that our website can be guilty of this.  I am really looking for ideas to make the club more attractive to owners.
