Topic Other Boards / Foo / Retail staffing question
- By Jeff (Moderator) Date 20.03.11 13:05 UTC
Hi All,

Hoping somebody can point me in the right direction. I am trying to find out more information regarding what breaks, how often etc retail staff are entitled to. Also staffing levels re H&S etc. I have had a brief look at the HSE website but am not getting anywhere so far - it's been a long time since I was involved in anything related to this but have just been asked.

Thanks,

Jeff.

Years ago I worked in M&S for a whole 2 weeks and we only got 4 hour shifts as if you worked more than that they had to give you a break.  It was years ago though so things may have changed.

One of the best places I have found for that type of information is the ACAS site.

It depends on how many hours each shift/day is. Not allowed to work any longer than 4 hours without a break.

Jeff

You might find this useful.  I searched on the working times directive.  H & S staffing levels are slightly different,  I would suggest the HSE website, you could always e mail a question to them if you can't find what you need.

Hi

I worked as a Health and Safety Manager before giving it all up to be a Stay at home Mum so I can help on this.

The legislation you need is the Working Time Regulations for breaks etc these state that if you work 6 uninterupted hours you are entiled to 20 mins break - this can be your lunch break though. It also sets down times between shifts etc.

If you are looking at the numbers of staff that need to be present at any one time there is no legislation that states this. A risk assessment will need to be done to comply with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (reg 4) to look at what risks there are etc. You can lone work there is no law against that but they would need to ensure they had procedures in place for emergencies and breaks etc.

If you need any more infor let me know - I am not sure if I answerd your question as it was a little vague sorry!

Love

Kath x

oops I am assuming you are adult and have no special needs as that makes a difference to what I have posted.

Thanks all.
Kath, that's great. I thought it would be something like that but the last time I was in HR the WTD was imminent so a while ago! :-)
Thanks again,

Jeff.

When i worked at Tesco 4 years ago i worked 4 hours a day and i was allowed a 15 mins break.
But when i worked at Sainsbury's with the same hours i wasn't allowed a break.
