Topic Dog Boards / Health / panacur for giardia and worms
- By rabid [gb] Date 20.03.11 10:50 UTC
Does anyone know if the 3 day, lower dose of Panacur which is recommended for giardia, kills both giardia and worms - or is it only effective against giardia?

Thanks

Giardia is treated for 5-7 days depending on severity.

Thanks Jean, but the instructions that come with Panacur state for 3 days.... ?

3 days is for normal worming...I agree with Jean,  giardia is treated for 5-7 days

I have just researched - and have cut and pasted.

Worm for 7 days with Panacur (based on body weight)- mix in a little canned dog meat, then put on kibble, then worm again with Panacur in another 2 weeks (for 7 more days), and they MUST be on a probiotic at the same time. (updated info 2/2/2011).

So, according to this advice, it needs two lots of treatment.  Have to say that it's years since I treated a dog for it, but I didn't use a probiotic, but can see the sense of it.  And I've never mixed with canned food, always used a syringe.  But then, we all have our own way of doing things.  But I was 100% sure that 3 days wasn't a long enough treatment.

Where is that cut and pasted bit from, Jean?

See here:  http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Intervet_Schering-Plough/Panacur_Granules/-29713.html

"Increased dosing for specific infections:
For the treatment of clinical worm infestations in adult dogs and cats or Giardia spp. infections in dogs, administer 50mg fenbendazole per 1kg (2.2lbs) bodyweight daily for 3 consecutive days."

Thanks, the bit about giardia is right at the bottom, on that link.

There is also an article from a beagle breeder here:  http://www.beaglesunlimited.com/health/canine-intestinal-worms-and-inexpensive-treatment

In a controversial move, he recommends buying the horse Panacur because it is exactly the same stuff and cheaper.  He also recommends a 3 day course, every other month, to control both giardia and worms.  (As giardia can be present in low amounts without clinical signs, so this is keeping it back.)

I'm just looking into this as my dogs eat all kinds of poo when on walks.  They leave when I tell them to, but by then they've already had a mouthful.  As a result, they keep reinfecting themselves with giardia:  It happens about once every year or two.  It means a trip to the vet, where I know what ABs he's going to prescribe (metronidazole).

I have tried to treat it once with Panacur myself in the past, but it didn't work - now I don't know whether that was because I followed the manufacturers instructions and used it for 3 days and maybe I should have gone against those instructions and used it longer...

Anyhow, I was planning on using it for 3 days at the giardia dosage, whenever I worm, so that I am hopefully keeping the giardia under control as well as worming - so it would be a preventative.  (That was why I asked if that lower dosage was also good for worms - perhaps worms need a one-off big dose, I don't know!)

I only had giardia in one of my dogs, several years ago.  I put every dog in the house on it for 7 days.  I can only reiterate.  It works.

Ok, perhaps I need to do more than the 3 days they say...

I have always bought the livestock 500ml or 1 litre size of Panacur (you save on bulk buying and I'm not sure whether VAT too) and until last year there was no problem, but it is now not licensed for Dogs and you are 'supposed' to buy the 100ml sizes at a much inflated price.

Not my fault my 'sheep' barked when I bought the last lot which is just running out ;)

It usually has at least two years shelf life and if like me you have a bunch of dogs to do, plus a litter maybe you will get through that amount in two years, I also let Friends have it at cost.  Last time I bought it it was £55 a litre, so equivalent to £5.50 for 100ml, at least a saving of 2/3rds on the Dog bottle size.

Dosage rates for different animlas vary so make sure you have a dog/Puppy dosage chart which you can even download from Hyperdrug's website.

Great, thanks!

It was 3 days Panacur for my dog with Giardia - the bottle definitely says that and so does the sticker from the vet surgery.

That said, I wouldn't be too concerned about giving it for longer. Panacur is a pretty safe wormer in my eyes.

Ive just come across this thread whilst googling. My parents took on a rescue dog this weekend, the rescue lady suggested a course of panacur as his poo is soft and it has a smell about it which suggests giardia.  Im going to the vets for them tomorrow to pick some up, am I ok to tell them its for giardia or will they want to see the dog first ? am I better off lying and saying its for something else ?
