Can anyone offer any advice please? I have a 5 month old rather skinny pup. She is currently being fed 3 times a day on Burns high energy lamb, she is perfectly well and full of energy as you would expect a 5 month old to be, but I just can't seem to get the weight on her, also she seems to be always going for a 'poo' it's not runny, all normal. This has been like it for the last month or so, and not what you would expect when fed on Burns. She was on R.C. Junior before and was just the same. I would welcome any thoughts or ideas anybody has.

I've 2 dogs who did very well on the Mini Bites (before the High Energy Lamb was available), swopped them to adult food at 12 months. The only problem I had going from Mini Bites to Adult, using the recommended feeding allowances, in both instances the dogs dropped weight by around 1kg ... meaning I needed to feed more than the recommended guidelines.

It may be she's not going to take any more weight ... I've a girly who I've now given up trying to get to gain weight.

I'd suggest contacting the Nutritionists at Burns for their advice, if not already done so, they tend to be pretty good.

Suppose depending on frequency of poos ... if they're all nice and normal & she's fit and healthy then sounds like you're doing ok!

I fed my pups' Mum on Burns for some time as it was the only food that suited her sensitive tum, but found like you that she dropped weight, so put her back on RC before she had her litter and her weight went back up. I have spoken to their nutritionist about this as I didn't want the same thing to happen again, and I was advised to try the High Energy Lamb as it's higher in protein and would also be ok for Mum to have, but I haven't put her on it yet.

I guess I'll just have to persevere and hope she settles down as she matures.

I think it's best if you stick to one food rather than chopping and changing, but it may just be that she's going to stay on the lean side. I remember with my first dog I pulled my hair out trying to get weight on her. At 18 months she just filled out nicely and remained so. My youngest girl now is coming up to 3 and again, I've given up trying to pad her out a little. She's extremely fit and healthy, beautiful coat and energy to die for!!

The thing with the recommended guidelines is they are just recommendations. Different food companies also use different calculations to come up with their recommendations.

I've tried feeding Burns.   Mine did great on the Burns Active, but it was changed and they weren't so good on it.  Unfortunately they lost weight on all the other Burns Varieties - toastracks !  I just couldn't feed them enough of it, more than the recommended and it would just go straight through :(

The food is probably not in agreement with her.  You said mum did the same but gained on another one.  Maybe try mixing different type od carbs or proteins throiught theit meals or wet dog foods; supermarket ones are quite fatty and weighting up qualitly.

You could look at the ingridents on the packs that upset mum and compare to what you feed now.  Look for the different ingidients and compare the ananlisis.  it might give you an idea what to do.  I've found arden Grange good for putting weight on.

For quick weight gain, raw lamb brest or rib bones.

Thank you all so much for all the different tips and ideas. Have decided to leave her on Burns for now as she's just started it and see if things improve, don't want to change it again just yet.

I raise my puppies on Royal Canin Maxi Junior too but found the same thing happened and they lost weight as they started to grow.  So I've moved them now on to the RC Active Junior which is higher in fat and they are gaining weight now.

My large breed would not hold their weight with Burns, they are on fish 4 dogs now, the sardine is good for weight gain.
They are all on this food now and all have wonderful coats too.. :)

This makes interesting reading.  I have a 13 week old pup who came to me on Burns Minibites.  Didn't matter how much I gave her, her hip bones were showing, and she looked thin.  In over a week, she didn't gain one ounce.  I have changed her over to Naturediet - what a difference!  She has gained 1.2 kg, now has a nice covering on ribs and hips.
