when is the right time to vaccinate puppies?

When is the right time and age for pups to be sent to new homes?

I would like your opinions as people vary on this. I have also noticed in other threads it sounds like to vaccinate early is a risk to pups health and I want to do the healthiest choice?

I prefer not to vaccinate my won puppies until 10 and 12 weeks even though the vaccines my vet uses can be given at 8 and 10.

My dogs live as a family group and my Mums have free access to their pups until they leave so my pups are likely to have high levels of maternal antibodies that will potentially interfere with vaccination uptake.

I do not let part vaccinated puppies go to new homes as there is every chance the new owners Vet will use different vaccines and they will then be re-started meaning pups will receive extra vaccinations which they don't need and indeed many feel may actually be harmful.

With any pups I have that are not yet homed at 8 weeks I will then vaccinate at 8 and 10 weeks and new owners coming along after the first jab will then have to wait for the full course.

In my medium size breed pups are mature enough to start going to new homes at about 7 1/2 weeks.

You have to take into account the breed of puppy.

My larger breed were vaccinated at 8 and 10 weeks by their new owners and I didnt microchip then. Reason for this was at 7-8 weeks the pups were more than ready to leave home and it was to their benefit to get them into their new home environment asap.They are a little big to take out in arms to see the world so early vacc ensures quick exposure to many new experiences.

My smaller breed are vaccinated by me at 8 and 10 weeks approx and microchipped at 12 weeks before they leave.
In my opinion this is the optimum time for a tiny little babe to settle in a new environment. They do everything later and slower than the larger breed and being prepared to leave home is delayed.
They can be carried around to see and hear external stimuli very early so socialisation and habituation can begin earlier,

i dont vaccinate any more i use to but giving them the 1st jab and new owners come take pup to their vets and 9times out of 10 the vaccine isnt the same so they have to start again :(...
mine start to go from 7weeks and 2 days but we have a large breed!

As a puppy buyer, I prefer to decide about vaccinations myself, and my choice after plenty of research is to leave pups til 12 weeks or even as late as 16 weeks especially if they stayed with mum a bit longer, and do just one course of jabs.

The reason you give puppies two [and in some frankly shocking vet practicse, THREE] is because maternal antibodies will effectivly, 'zap' the vaccine and the dog will not be covered when the maternal antibodies wear off.
