Hi there,
Does anybody know of a way to prevent or cure a week old pup suffering from milk sickness. He over-eats and then coughs and snorts milk out of his nose and mouth.
Other than this, he is absolutely fine. He is lively, not dehydrated and is not off of his food at all.
Many thanks  =)

Can't offer much help but if you have not already done so check that his pallet is intact.

All pups were checked at birth and have been checked again since. It's because he is greedy and is very entusiastic during feeding. Just wondered if I could help him in some way because don't like hearing him cough and splutter.
Thanks for the reply =)

hi, try taking him off then putting him back dont let him go underneath your bitch as he could choke as the teats underneth will have a fast flow when they pull milk thru, i know you might have to do this alot but worth a try... might slow him down and give him time to take the milk down slower...  i had a pup like that very greedy but now 4 weeks old and hes fine. wean him early onto sloppy food that will fill him then he will take less milk(hopefully) worth a try. karen.

Not the formation of the mouth then, have no other ideas but I understand why you would be concerned.

Put him on a smaller teat so the flow isnt as good 2nd to front ones or once another has had a feed so the let down reflex has passed and its not squirting out. (my own experience here whilst he turns round to look at something shiny its squirting him in the side of the head!)

it is a worry i had a litter of 4 pups about 2 years ago now and mum had so much milk ,can rememeber it like it was yesterday ...i made my hubby stay up all night and watch them (i wasnt well) and not fall asleep 3 of the pups had drink so much and inhaled the milk they were sick 4 days later we were at the vets with them coughing, they had got an infection but a week of AB's and they were sorted ,good luck with him.

Hiya, thanks for all your replies, sorry it's delayed but Mum & pups have been keeping me busy!
Have tried putting him on a higher teat but he always pushes his way back down to the lower ones. He is a right greedy guts. Very big too! He does seem slightly better though, I think he's learning =) xx
