Well my Goldie has now began the big moult, and there is alot of hair!! She is groomed daily and we get alot of hair out this way, but have seen these advertised and wondered if they were any good or just a gimmick? She has a beautifull coat and would hate to use anything that would spoil it.

My preference is a good undercoat rake or a comb with a rubber band threaded through the teeth.
- By bracey [gb] Date 02.03.11 16:35 UTC
Thanks, we use a undercoat rake and it does remove a good amount,I'm guessing that the furmaitor is just another gimmick!

Yes the Furminator is worth its weight in gold! I use it on my Malinois and my Golden and it is far, far superior to anything I have ever tried before. But don't pay the silly prices you see -get one off Ebay, that's where I got mine. You should be able to find one for a tenner including postage. Medium size will do a Golden.

Not necessarily, but I don't find it that good on a Golden's coat and a lot of people have said it cuts the coat, which isn't ideal.
- By Pedlee Date 02.03.11 16:39 UTC
Maybe it depends on the coat!
- By Goldmali Date 02.03.11 16:42 UTC
It certainly doesn't cut the coat and it does work well on Goldens. :) The only dogs it must not be used on are breeds without a double coat.

we use it on our akita and works brill, but not on our spitz as it just cut the coat so we use a rake or long tooth comb
but i love our furminator had it for years now and the amount we get out of him is unbelievable

I thought that Goldens did have double coats??  A nice weatherproof top coat and a fluffy undercoat?

Furminators are fab! I use it on my huskys and it is by far the best brush we found and trust me we tried a lot! It removes loads of the undercoat, doesnt seem to hurt or upset the dogs and it definately does not cut the coat! I got mine off ebay and despite the chewed handle thanks to zak it is still fantastic.
- By kayenine [gb] Date 02.03.11 18:48 UTC
It definitely doesn't cut the coat, all the fur that comes off is undercoat. I think there's a possibility of it damaging the top coat though, so I only use it on my neutered dogs that aren't shown and are fluffy, and not on my youngster who is shown and has a lovely glossy coat.

no not cut the coat as take chunks out of it, but the way my spitz coat is it seemed for some reason it seemed to take the top coat off and leave the undercoat in place, but i can use it on my rottie and the akita and it takes lots of undercoat outof them and leaves the coats i think in good condition, can't use it on my crestie either who is a powderpuff just does not work on her coat at all, we also use it on our long haired cats and it works great on them

I use mine on my Kelpie and on a Labrador that I bath, its great, gets loads of dead coat out.  I got mine from Amazon .... £4.30 !!!

> but i can use it on my rottie

some one suggested one to me & i have boxers, i thought they were just for long/thick coated breeds?
- By Norman [gb] Date 02.03.11 21:31 UTC
I thought it would be a gimmick and I won one in a raffle - I wouldn't be without one for the world now it get the undercoat out in no time.

DUH!!  Time I went to bed!! :) :)

Gemma I had one for my Staffies which possibly have a coat similar to Boxers and didn't find them to be any better than a normal brush.
- By Gemma86 [gb] Date 03.03.11 11:12 UTC
Thanks Celli, I might see if I can try one on the dogs before I buy

I just use a Zoom groom & a big round stripping comb which seems to do the job :)

I have a Furminator look-alike called a Fur Buster. I got it from Pet Planet at half the price and it is brilliant. I groomed a friend's Goldie with it once, it stripped out masses of undercoat but didn't cut any top coat. I think it's great. If you look on the site, the blurb tells you which breeds of dog it's not recommended for.

It looks like they have a new one since I bought mine called a Fur Beater which looks much the same.

They can be used for short-coated breeds too - you can get different lengths.  I wouldn't think you'd need one on a boxer though!  I did buy mine to use on my oldest dobe - single-coated breed and I wouldn't normally use them on dobes but she had molted after a nutritional issue and the loose hair wasn't coming out.  The only thing that shifted it was the furminator, but now it's all gone I don't use it any more.
