Just seen an advert for Habbits! Belgian Hare cross Lop rabbits. Makes a change from labradoodles!

I don't know much about rabbits but I think a  Belgian Hare is a breed of rabbit ( and jolly nice looking they are too ) sounds like another rip off to me.

yes it is, I dont think you would be able to cross a proper hare with a rabbit.  Its another case of crossing breeds and coming up with stupid names !

the Belgian Hare is a very handsome breed of rabbit, quite long and sleek and chocolatey :) and obviously easy prey for the crossbreeding bandits

If only I'd known years ago when I had an accidental mating between a Black & Tan Belgian Hare (rare breed then) and a Tri-Colour Dutch (another rare breed). I could have sold the 14 rather boring-looking wild-rabbit-coloured babies for HUNDREDS!

When I was a child we had a rabbit that was a cross between a Dutch and a Flemish. Didn't cost us a penny, these days he'd have been sold as a rare Flutch or Demish, costing several hundred ;-)

they sell those giant rabbits in PAH for over £100  I dont even think they are pedigree, im sure you could get a much better bred one, and a pedigree from a proper breeder for half that.

Yes they do, just labelled "Giant House Rabbits".  No mention of breed or the fact that being giants they do have a shorter lifespan than average-sized rabbits. If they have been poorly bred then that could be a lot less.

The pure breeds of Giants in the UK today are British Giant, Continental Giant (known as Flemish Giant outside the UK) and the [UK] Flemish Giant (the only Giant we had here in the last century due to quarantine rules about importing, so they branched off into a separate breed in their own right).

French Lops are now considered Giant as well, but were nowhere near as big 30 years ago.

Belgian Hares are not considered Giants although they are on the large side... but racy with it... more tall and long (like a greyhound). They are also considered to be one of the most intelligent breeds (along with Tri Dutch!).

Thinking about a recent discussion here about giant breeds of dogs having shorter lifespans due to size - it is true in rabbits so I am not surprised if it is the same in dogs.
