Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Ovulation and timing of matings

Hi. Keith Shea did an ovulation scan on my bitch on Friday. He said it showed she had ovulated on thursday and that optimum days for mating would be yesterday (day 11), today and tomorrow. She is not a maiden, she had her first litter of 3 pups in 2009. Anyway, stud dog was interested in her yesterday but she was not keen, flagging now and again, but often putting her tail down when he tried to mate her and also attempting to walk off. In the end she kept sitting down. This tells me she was not ready - but that contradicts the scan. Took her back today, she definitely seemed more willing and he did manage to penetrate her, not sure if we got a slip mating or not as there was no visible fluid. We do plan to take her back tomorrow, as according to the ovulation scan tomorrow is still a good day. I guess I am just wondering if it is possible that she has not quite reached "boiling point" inspite of the scan saying we could mate her from yesterday. Or could it just be that she is not compatible with the dog - although she keeps licking his face/ being playful. and generally appears rather fond of him ?
Also, if she did ovulate on thursday is there no point in trying her again after tomorrow (either as a last ditch attempt or fingers crossed, a second mating). Hope someone can advise !

Readiness and willingness are not the same thing.  Some bitches and dogs will only mate during a short window.

By that do you mean that possibly something could happen tomorrow ?
Will any day after that be too late do you think, seeing that ovulation apparently took place on thursday ?

If ovulation occurred Thursday (it takes around 24 - 48 hours) the earliest there would be fertiliseable eggs would be Saturday and they should be OK until today, with Wednesday at the outside (they can be viable up to three days).

That is assuming the scan was correct.

Thanks Barbara, I am actually waiting for Keith to call me back for further advice, but I think you have probably already answered my questions, thank you :-)
