I give up with her she clearly cannot see past her own 'mission'.
- By LJS Date 22.02.11 07:42 UTC
Where is any reference to JH as cant see it although haven't had a cup of tea yet so my eyes aren't fully open or functioning !

This bit REALLY made me feel sick:
We have been desexing all our puppies at 6 weeks of age for 13 years and have never had a problem which could be related to the timing of the surgery.
- By furriefriends Date 22.02.11 10:15 UTC
what 6 weeks  !poor little things must never grow up
- By helensdogsz Date 22.02.11 10:20 UTC
Its appalling. If you  read the reasons for doing it this person seems to suggest that it will stop just about every bit of behaviour that could be come a problem. She would be much better off selling cuddly toys as she obviously doesn't want real dogs.
- By Celli [gb] Date 22.02.11 10:37 UTC
This bit stood out for me.
We have chosen to use the small poodles because the two breeds have very few genetic problems in common.

Does the person seriously think both parents have to have the same defect for it to be passed on ! ?,  surely it would be better to start with sound dogs in the first place.
- By ridgielover Date 22.02.11 11:21 UTC
Not one mention of any sort of health testing of any sort for the breeds she is using :(
Saying that there is "no doubt" that Labradoodles will be recognised as a breed in one section and then admitting that they don't breed true (as an excuse for selling them neutered) :(
Neutering baby puppies :(
And then suggesting that all entire male dogs are a time bomb waiting to go off  :( :( :(

It may be me being my usual cynical self but I would hazard a guess that the reason for 'early de-sexing' is to ensure that there aren't too many people in a position to go into competition with them rather than any altruistic thoughts for the well being of the animals concerned.

I can't find anything with reference to Jemima on this website, can you tell me where it is please?
- By Celli [gb] Date 22.02.11 13:19 UTC
Jacksgirl, the same thought went through my head.

Sadly it's not unusual for puppies to be desexed at such a young age in Aus.

The website and puppy farm (IMO) on the first post of this thread is run by a woman who, along with some other people, started the AAPBD (Australian Association of Pet Dog Breeders).  Shonky to say the least.

I'd be interested too to see where JH has her stated 'approval' (for want of a better word) for such places?
- By Tessies Tracey Date 22.02.11 15:00 UTC
After some searching on ''the blog'', I have found the comment of ''clearly a breeder doing good things'' is on there.

Along with such chestnuts as 'she is clearly a commercial breeder, but I don't think she is a puppy farmer' and 'She's vet and has a degree in genetics'.

Oh dear me.

If JH really really wants to get involved in the Australian puppy farm market, she really needs to actually be over here and have first hand experience of just how HUGE the situation is.
Without living here and seeing it first-hand (which I HAVE) then there really is no room for comment as far as I'm concerned.
As for comments regarding the AAPBD, well!  You can't have a continued dislike for the KC and then state that AAPBD's 'aims look good'.

:(

You have to scroll down past the article itself to the comments section.

Have read it now and sitting here shaking my head :-(

A good breeder what is she on about ? It just goes to show the unbelievable blinkered view she seems to keep on and on about. I think she sees what she wants to see just to satisfy her view on the world of dog breeding .
- By Norman [gb] Date 22.02.11 16:36 UTC
Ohh to heck with it lets give her the keys to the puppy farmers gates lol - the more of this sort of thing I read with her name on it or endorsed by her should I say the more credability (if she ever had any) she is loosing carry on and let her be a bigger laughing stock than she already is.  Sadly she could have done a lot of good........

Goodness. There's a bit of cherry-picking going on here! I have said that there are things about this breeder that look good - that she is a vet, has a degree in genetics, does follow-up health surveys on her dogs (and has published the results); offers ongoing support to puppy-buyers etc. But please note that it wasn't me who recommended the site in the first place. I have also stated quite clearly that I don't approve of early de-sexing and my last post on her said this:

Well one would hope that a vet with a degree in genetics would be upholding high welfare standards. Is she, at the end of the day, a good breeder? Impossible to tell. Have done a bit of trawling - she is the President of the Australiaian Association of Pet Breeders; aims look good but there IS some vociferous opposition out there from people claiming the Assoc endorses puppy farms. That all said, I still think the website looks good. I think it's perfectly possible (if too rarely true in practice) to breed a lot of litters well (a claim that the KC itself would make, presumably, given that there are volume breeders on the ABS). But would I buy a pup from her? Not without asking lots more questions and being happy with the answers - but then that's true of every breed.

I have emailed her to ask for info on her breeding stock as the website says merely that she breeds from healthy stock and she does not list specific health tests. Let's see what she comes back with.
