Pannus is completely different to a corneal tumour, it is an autoimmune problem and can be controlled very well through the use of Optimmune which is basically a cyclosporin solution.  It is a lifelong condition but can be managed really well.

I was distraught when one of mine had this many years ago, it was discovered at 6 years old.  He lived until he was 11 and I didn't use the cream at all for the last couple of years of his life although I understand this to be very unusual and that treatment should continue for the whole of the dogs life normally.  I lost my lad in the end through a spleen tumour, not at all related to the pannus.
