Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / URGENT Vaccination Problem
- By KaneFizz [gb] Date 16.02.11 19:04 UTC
I have just taken one of my puppies for her first vaccination at a different vets. When I got home I saw all the other puppies and lthe bitch run to to spot where the injection was admisistered to smell it. I checked the spot and its soaking wet, im quite positive its the vaccine. I rang them they said its probably seaked out a little but she will still have immunity and it isnt hamful to the others after ingesting it.

Is this true Im very worried she wont have any immunity and even more so that the rest of the litter (unvaccianted) could catch something from the liquid.

Please help

It sounds to me that the needle has gone through one side of the skin and the other. I see this often in the rescue centre I work at with microchipping. It also not uncommon for it to go through both layers of skin with a vacc either. Im not sure if Youll know what I mean...when you pinch the skin on the shoulders then the needle would go through both sides.

I really dont know what to suggest as never had this happen to one of my dogs personally. If it were me Id seek a second opinion of another vet, maybe your usual vet?
Hope someone will be along to help you soon
Amy

Thanks Amy for replying, I know exactly what you mean, and I feel so ashamed going to this vets. I suppose its true `you get what you pay for`. I poke to my usual vet tonight he suggests starting the whole course again with him (vanguard) as he says its more dangerous for her to be exposed to all these diseases than vaccinating with different brands.

The thing is you would still expect the same level of care, no matter how much they charge at the end of the day they are still vets and they have a job to do. Things like this happen at times but Im shocked that the vet didnt notice theyd done it. The thing is they give vaccs that often that they rarely even look at what theyre doing!! I would do as your vet says..good luck

I took a very small Chi pup for the first vaccination and the usual health checks with my vet some time ago.  They booked the 2nd jab with a veterinary nurse.  I couldn't believe it when I felt the stuff run down my hand!  She had stuck the needle straight through the skin.  No apology, and no mention of not getting it right either!

I was in with another dog soon after, and asked the head vet how much vaccine was needed.  When I told him that well over half had dripped on me, he immediately booked the head nurse to re-do the jab.  I understand that, shortly after, she gave a talk to all the nurses at the practise, explaining what to do if you get it wrong!

I don't agree your vets argument that it "seeped out" and would make it very plain that I wanted it redone at no charge.

Hello Jean,

I rang this morning and told him I wasnt very happy about it and id always be wondering whether she is vaccinated or not. He said come in and he will do it again for free. which he did.
I made sure none came out this time. Im gonna make sure I see the other vet for the second vacc in 2 weeks. He blamed the dog saying she is too small and wiggling around.

    My god!  A vet that hasn't met a small wiggly puppy!!  I would have been gobsmacked!
