Hi, not been on for a long time, my question is, sometimes when I give Floyd his worming tablet he is sick.  So I gave him his worming tablet tonight at about 5pm this evening, he has just been outside and has been sick twice, is this normal???  he is not always sick, but the past 2 or 3 times he has, do I need to give him another one or has it been digested enough to be in his system.

How often are you worming him, and what are you using?

Hi Jean, I worm him every 3 months, (though I am 3 weeks late from his last date of worming) - I give him Drontal plus XL for dogs of 35kg and over.

I will be straight with you - no way would I worm my larger breeds every 3 months!  I'm very anti filling them full of chemicals if not really needed.

Is there a reason for him needing to be done this often?  (Apart from the vet saying you have to.) 

It does seem as if the Drontal is annoying his gut.  I Drontal my Collies with their food.  I'm assuming that you wouldn't give it on an empty stomach?

The vet says I have to be very consistent and every 3 months with his worming, as he was diagnosed with pancreatitus at 10 months old.  We now have that under control, I went against what the vet wanted with that, he wanted me to keep feeding Royal Canin veterinary "sensitive" or the "low fat", but these were costing me nearly £80 per month to feed him (he was on this for nearly 2.5 years), plus Floyd was still having his off days on this food every couple of weeks or so.  A friend recommended Pal Working Dog, that was 7 months ago and we haven't looked back since, he has had probably 3 off days in total in this period eating this food. But I still keep the worming bit up, he has this mixed up in his food.  He is a boxer, how often would you worm him, he gets walked in a variety of places, but mainly on farmland and round woods.
 

I do my adults (same breed) every six months with Drontal but I use the ordinary size tablets, not the XL.  Don't usually have any trouble afterwards but occasionally, one of them has been sick.  I give the tablets an hour or so after the dogs have been fed.  They get walked in the same sort of environments as your boy too.  I certainly wouldn't want to be worming every 3 months, especially the old girl (almost 12 years).  Youngsters (under 12 months) are not included in this regime.

Drontal does seem to cause sickness in some dogs.  I've experienced it and I know there have been threads on CD in the past about this, and other, wormers.

I seem to remember that my vet once said that as long as the sickness was 3 hours, or more, later then there would be no need for another dose (do check that fact though and it might depend on the size of the dog)

I was also told it's best to worm in the evening, and that feeding the meal in two smaller amounts helps to settle the gut.  So feed half the meal with the wormer at your usual meal time, then feed the remainder of the meal about an hour later.  It's certainly worth a try in future :)
