evening i would be grateful if i could have some advice

I own 2 staffies already and we have just taken in a 10 month old staffie x as he was almost on his way to the dogs home. so we have taken him in.
any way since getting him on Tuesday i have had a niggling doubt that he could maybe have some pitt bull in him  as we dont know his true family tree..... my question is how do i find out if he has pitt bull in him and if he does what does it involve as ive heard so many different things. thanks in advance for any advice you can offer

It's impossible to say... there isn't even a specific DNA test you can do and to be honest, if anyone asks you just say he's a staffy cross from the dog's home. That's all he is.... and all he ever will be. As long as he is well-behaved and not in any way aggressive or dangerous then he will, like many other staffies of dubious ancestry, be perfectly okay and nobody will be ringing up to report him. There are so many crosses around these days, that "look" a bit pit but aren't - people have been crossing all sorts to try and get ones that have the look, so you'll probably never know for sure.

Oh... and PS: - the most important part - Enjoy your dog :)

They are, but there are a very many dogs that LOOK a "bit pit" around, far too many to confiscate the lot..... many are just plain staffie crosses. Even a lab x boxer "looks" like a pit.... but obviously isn't. There are just a few specially trained people who can tell for sure. As I said before, if the dog is well behaved there's no reason to worry, and it's on his paperwork from the dog's home he is a Staffy cross.... and that's the end of it....

Even in countries where pits are legal, it's the human on the end of the lead that counts - many many pits are very gentle, friendly completely non-aggressive dogs.

The worry is if someone thinks he is of "Type" and a Staffy x Boxer can look of "type" - Think the main thing is size is he very big for a Staffy?

Providing his temperament is good then I do not think you need to worry but if you have doubts about his safety with your family and your dogs then you may have to think hard about keeping him.

Absolutely - and if you do keep him, do something to prove you're a good owner - enrol in KCGCS and get some good training classes under your belt, or even try flyball or agility, just show people how good these dogs are in the right hands!

One of my past trainers at KCGCS classes had Staffies and Staffy crosses and took them to the top level in Flyball...

Thanks for the replies everyone we have to book him in the vets anyway as he isnt chipped and i'm not sure he has had any jabs. So the vet should be able to let us know....Hopefully he can just have staffie x on his papers...... he is a lovely dog just a bit boisterious but with training he is showing a bit of improvement already and the other staffs have really taken to him my girl just wants to mother him..... there is such a grey area on the dangerous dogs bill "pitt bull types" but then thats a whole new debate......

Would not expect the vet to know any more than you do so I would say he is a Staffy cross to anyone who asks and that is the end of that - make sure he is well trained and socialised particularly with dogs and you should have not problems.

I agree with Nova and others even the so called "experts" and I dont mean the young adult down the road lol wont be able to tell what his true parentage is. Stick with the staff x description and join some training groups to have fun with him and show what a good specimen of the "breed " he is

there was a program on a little whie ago (cant rember the name) that was following the police unit set up to tackle status dog problems in one of the bigger citys who were responding to calls reporting agressive dogs, pitbull types and were going around taking to people with dogs they suspected to be pitbull type. when they did beleive a dog to be pitbull type (as the word type means the dog only has to look pitbull to be considered pitbull type) they took them back to there kennels and had there expert (they never showed or named the person so no clue what makes the expert an expert) and if the expert deamed them to be pitbull type but had a good temperment the owner was given a certain amount of time to fill in paperwork to apply for the dog to be put on the exempt dogs list, (must be neutered, chipped, insured and muzzled in public at all times). Dogs whos temperment they wernt happy with were deemed dangerous and were putdown. Sadly of the 3 dogs who where on the program whos temerments were deemed good only one of the owners applyed to have there dog back.

So as others have said call him a staffy X (as you dont know he has pit in him, good chance he hasnt) and if he is well behaved you shouldnt have a problem, but but if he was ever reported for his looks it doesnt mean all is lost as you can get him on the exemption list if his temperment is good.
